I have registered canoes that haven't been registered for 30 years. Write up a receipt from previous owner. Shouldn't be a problem.

quote ozarkpaddler: "quote sedges: "Sawyer made three solos about the same time in the mid=late 1980s. DY Special, Summersong and Autumn Mist. Which you have I have no idea without measurements. All designed by David Yost I believe. All are nice boats to paddle for sure. Even if it is in rough shape, but repairable, I think $200 is a good price.
I registered a used buy canoe last year with no receipt or paperwork- no problem. Canoes have no paperwork in GA. I understand that in some states certain classes of motorcraft have to have titles, but usually paddle craft are exempt from most paperwork."

I've bought and sold a lot of boats over the years with no paperwork. MN is one of the few states that asks for registration. That said, I've registered a few boats in MN that I bought that had no "Paperwork" at both the Ely and Winona, MN license offices.

I had an Autumn Mist, it looks like it may be a little longer? It's not kevlar, it's their fiberglass or "Goldenglass" layup. Regardless, it looks like a good deal and lack of paperwork does NOT mean it's stolen. If you find it's an Autumn Mist and don't want it, hold it for me until June and I'll give you $150 profit for your troubles!"

Ozark, I'll keep you in mind.

I vote Summersong. Just get a handwritten sales receipt.....price, hull ID. You may have to pay sales tax (on the $200) to get it back "in the paperwork system" and get it registered. That's what I have to do in Wi.

fiberglass. i also don't know much about these canoes but know that they were well designed. probably weighs 50 pounds. certainly worth $200 if the hull is in good shape.

Its an old boat. Maybe a Summersong or an Autumn Mist. From the 80's in the heyday of fast solo canoes.. Hardly a tank.. Its a good buy and it will probably teach you much. Some of the Sawyers were" sporty" Along about 1990 Sawyers made in Canada became Swift and my 1989 Sawyer 190 has a more modern decal.
Minnesota must have a way to work around the paperwork.. I would be surprised if any existed for this 30 year old boat.

Knock around at the cabin.. Only for your disliked relative who you would like to see get wet.

Register it in a more paperwork friendly state.

BTW, that was NOT just "Lip service." I had an Autumn Mist and sold it years ago. Always thought I'd get a kevlar one later on, but they're no longer made. Here's my old Autumn Mist:

I'll post photos when I pick it up this weekend. I think it's a DY Special, seller said it was 17ft.

That looks a lot like my Sawyer Autumn Mist. But may be a similar model. Mine has the exact same thwart and foot bar locations and the same sliding, height adjustable seat (which is awesome). For 200 it's probably a great deal. I love mine and am very glad I bought it. It took me a few trips to get comfortable in the boat and it's more stable loaded than unloaded. Paddles great, can handle a good load of gear. I fish from mine often.

I bought 2 previously owned canoes w/o paperwork from the seller. Just downloaded the registration form from the DNR site and filled it out. The only signature you need is your own.

Get the form here: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/rlp/licenses/universal_form.pdf

Did you just bring this form to the DMV? Had the boats been registered previously?"

The boats were previously registered, but all you really need is the hull number if it hasn't previously been registered. I took the form to a local registrar in Golden Valley city hall.

I think it's a DY special, pretty sure it's not an Autumn Mist, (I have two) but I agree it's well worth 200...

I don't believe Sawyer made anything other than composite canoes and I don't think they ever made a solo that would be considered a tank. We need to know the length to get an idea for which model it is but $200 is a very good deal if it's in any sort of decent condition. Buy first and ask questions later. If you don't like it then resell it and make a few bucks.

There needs to be a paper trail to the last registered owner to get the boat registered in MN. If you are out of state, the boat still needs to be registered for use in the BWCA, but maybe they don't cross-check across state lines?

Also:
No paper trail + cheap boat = hot boat

Ouch! Selling/buying with strangers is always shifty business until money changes hands. It stings to lose a deal though.

Yeah, if it is 30 years old, probably not much of a chance there is paperwork.

The only 'workaround' that I know of in MN is to register as homemade, but that is still not within the law. I'm not sure what other options the state gives us though.

Unfortunately after leading me on for 24 hours and saying it is available he then calls and tells me oh well, I decided to sell it to a friend who just decided he might want it, I call that a really crappy way to do anything, i had told him I was ready to pull the trigger on the boat the very first time I talked to him and received no indication that someone was going to get the boat no matter what i offered. Hope his friend puts it on the rocks and destroys the boat in front of his face now
