talk me in or out of it.
have a whisper light and it s ok.
my coleman 442 i've hated it forever. so i'm looking at a svea 123. i know it s loud, but if it has less parts than my 442 and won't melt like the whisper lights pump.
any thoughts?

The biggest knock is the weight. I have one, don't use it much but it's fun to have. In my opinion they're not very versatile, probably best as a water boiler but you could probably say that about many stoves. They've been around for a long time, usually there's a good reason for that.

I have used the Optimus Svea 123 and much prefer the jetboil Flash. About the same cost & weight. The jetboil boils a little faster and does not need a windscreen (well, most of the time). I also prefer the canister - never had a leak. If I were winter camping, I would definitely take the Svea; canisters don't work well in the cold. There you have it; buy both!

Well, I had one from 1976 until my brother in law lost it in the mid '90's. Did without one for awhile, but felt my gear was lacking without one. I use my little canister stove most of the time, but the Svea is the winter stove and it goes with me car camping as my back up. They don't break or wear out and easy to fix if they do. Love it and this one will be going to someone else only AFTER I die.

This is a worldwide proven stove. It works just great. You already said the only downside, the noise. It is built really sturdy and not to many moving parts. I just thought of another slight concern. Don't put a windscreen on this stove other than what it comes with. If you do make sure it has room to breath and cool the stove. You do not want to heat up the fuel tank with a home made wind screen. I have a similar stove, Optimus 8-R and it is a real trooper.

What is wrong with the Whisperlite? Your not supposed to sit the tank and pump over the burner.
I have a few and the old versions almost simmer yet have ton's of heat, the pumps were improved 15 years ago and now are as reliable as any others.
The Svea 123 while reliable is heavier and neither as adjustable or powerful, and has many more parts.
Will not get into the Colemans other than saying, flimsy, and need more frequent cleaning, careful handling. Yes I have several up to an Apex. I'll fix em and clean em for others but do not use mine other than to have them around.

now i need to get my old coleman 442 cleaned up and listed for sale.

" issue with whisper series is you have to use the heat deflectors. to get the BTU's advertised and to keep from melting the pump. they have their place in your gear, but my coleman does not.
