If you plan to use the canoe every year, then buy one. I rented 2 canoes before I purchased so as to try them out. I got the best fit for me.

I have sold many canoes and kayaks on Craigs List. None sold on the for sale forum. Probably because Craigs List is local and these forums are not. I sold a Wenonah Sundowner in tuffweave in just a couple of days on Craigs List. Wish I kept it. That was a VERY fast boat.

I've bought 2 canoes on Ebay, 1 canoe on craigslist and two off this site. I've also sold 3 to people on this site.

List it here, on paddling.com and on craigs list with a listing for STP/Mpls, but specify where you are. STP/Mpls present a bigger market than Grand Marais.

For the record, I use CL a lot and have had no problems with selling or buying, except once recently where the seller seems to have fallen off the face of the earth after we agreed on a deal. I use the CL email contact method. Have not had spam issues or low ballers. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Is this canoe very tippy? My parents have a sundowner II maybe? Not sure if thats the correct model but it is horrible. If you turn your head too fast you are going to tip this thing over

It may be a 17' Sundowner that is tippy, an 18' Sundowner is not. Funny how a foot can make all the difference in handling.

I have a Wenonah Sundowner that I would like to sell. I live in Grand Marais. Where would be a good place to market this canoe? I've posted it on local sell and swap sites and have put up posters. But no bites; I think I need to move the sales effort outside of the local area. Any ideas?

First of all, you must specify if it is fiberglass, Kevlar, Royalex etc. the weight, condition and if it is a 17' or 18' Sundowner. And by the way, it is a Wenonah. Your idea of condition may be different than a buyers idea so be honest and get a second opinion.

You can list on Craigslist, but then be prepared to negotiate when the buyer comes to complete the sale. Take several pictures and point out the good and the bad. You may even list it on eBay with local pickup or even offer to deliver as well or at least meet part way.

I bought a Prism on eBay and was very satisfied with the transaction.

I sold a Hobi Kayak on eBay. The buyer didn't read the payment requirements (Paypal) before and wanted to pay cash when I delivered it. He most likely wanted to offer me less. Both eBay and Paypal take a percentage, so build it into your price.

If you still have the canoe in April 2018, then you would have a good excuse to drive down to the Midwest Mountaineering Canoe and Kayak Expo in Minneapolis, where you could try to sell it at the Saturday morning auction. And, you know, buy another boat for the trip home.

Here and Paddling.com (Used to be P.net) are the only places I use to sell, and I've had 100% success selling about 20ish over the last 16-17 years. Two sold in less than 24 hours and had multiple offers. I've bought them off of Craigslist, but I'm always more wary of Craigslist. On at least two occasions I've caught sellers using MY pictures they got off the internet to sell THEIR canoes. One wasn't even the same MODEL.

That said, my last few boats came from Craigslist. But I ask a lot of questions and make certain to make boat pickups in secure, public places.

This site has a "Items For Sale or Wanted" forum.
Another option would be putting it up for sale on Craigslist.

Your question really comes down to individual preferences... Do you also want to take on the occasional expense for maintenance & registration? A week's rental can be upwards of $300 for a Kevlar boat, you'd have to take two 2 week long trips in order to "break even" on rental cost savings.

Others will buy new equipment and then sell after their trip - from the canoes all the way down to tents, sleeping bags, and pads.

Do you foresee yourself using it around home?

Ultimately, for me, the question of "worth it" or if it made sense really came down to the emotional component. I enjoy opening my garage door and seeing my boat hanging from the ceiling. Occasionally I'll touch the boat or brush the gunwales with a hand as I pass underneath. I'm a tactile kinda guy tho....
Having my own canoe has opened up a new dimension of recreation in my area that I previously was unaware of.
