Hammocks by an unbeliever I've no dog in this fight. The last time I used a hammock was the old Vietnam-era jungle hammock. It worked fine until a "friend" cut the tie rope when I was in it.

It sounds like that author has a bias, and his bias lead to a poor hammock testing base. "hammock materials are sub-standard hippie “natural” fibers clearly tied together by underpaid workers who will never have the luxury of sleeping in a hammock" is just a straight up lie. I'd venture to say the majority of people who hammock camp on this website use suspension systems made from Dymeema fibers which is made mostly by Samson ropes, aka one of the best names in rope. "Hippy fibers"? The M10/Hex1.0 fabrics used to make my hammock are some of the most light, strongest, and definetly not natural fibers. This author rants for 80% of his article about how he's basically jealous of other people posting happy pictures of themselves in hammocks on Instagram, and offers nothing other than opinion as evidence of his point. I have a feeling he's referring to at the very most, casual hammocks that cost $40 at Wal-Mart or Target, you hang in em your back yard, use them twice, and forget you have them before the rain makes then undesirable and you throw them away. I have titanium hardware, dyneema woopies, and 100% confidence in my gear. The author has poor research skills, and a bad case of acrophobia.

acrophobia

Awesome word, I had to google that one, I learn more on this web-site by accident.

The author must have a poor social life, and a bad case of acrophobia. "

Obviously the article was written with some humor. And by the way, the author is one of the best ice climbers there ever was--hardly acrophobic. Niagara Falls Helmcken Falls

I'm just saying. If you own a hammock that is even the bare essentials that are required to hammock camp in the bw, there is absolutely no way you can read this article and think hes talking at all about your setup. Some humor? I didn't catch it and amidst his humorously disgusting ignorance. I'm glad he's not afraid of heights! That just means he's a terrible gear sponsor, and he has a pathetically narrow and unrealistic idea of what hammocks actually are. Hennessey,Jacks,Dreamhammock,Dutch,Warbonnet, a few of these have been around for almost a decade, and none of them have ever offered the substantially poor quality hammocks the author refers to. So..... he's a world class ice climber, does he use cheap equipment? I doubt he buys cheap stuff, therefore he must be aware that there is a "low shelf" and a "middle" and a "top" when it comes to everything in life, especially recreational equipment. I don't get why he only thinks low shelf exists when it comes to hanging? How is he so oblivious of what's been on the market for YEARS. I bet he's just some broke ass blog writer who once got recognition for his climbing, and now he's sour cause he can't afford to buy a real hammock like his friends, so he "hates" on hammocks in this way lol.

That's a lot of animosity.

You said you have no dog in this. Let's talk about something you do, I'll pose the opposite opinion of you and support my position with an asinine article that baffles you with how disconnected it is from reality. You just gonna roll over and let that idiocy and ignorance spread like a cold at a day care? I got nothing against tenters, I won't dismiss tenting by pretending only 20lb tents exist and that they're made out of "hippie fibers". That article has no disclaimer that this is actually a joke and that were chose to ignore a massive market of hammocks intentionally, the authors bias shows so bad he didn't have to include such a disclaimer. The joke is that people eat his crap up.....

Yeah, it does seem like either terribly-executed humor or plain ignorance due to the fact that his experience sounds limited to garbage products combined with improper technique. All of his points are EASILY defeated by use of a quality product and good technique.

Me: a tent camper with a couple TNH hammocks used for day-lounging or the occasional warm night sleep. Not opposed to evolving the hammocks into a primary sleep system instead of the tent for some trips, but dunno when that will be.

Our groups are all hammock users now.

I remember one year some "unidentified to this day" guy in the group "zip tied" several guys into their hammocks by zip tying the zippers shut. Probably the only down side we have run into.

I love my Warbonnet Blackbird. I have made several hammocks for my kids. When they are old and responsible enough, they may get a Blackbird under the tree.

When you are sleeping on a rock or your all wet because of a leak in the floor and you ended up in a river or you are constantly sliding down to one end of the tent because of a slope (this last one was always the one I hated most cause I can't do much about ground slope).....just then, as you are lying awake and hearing the snoring of your hammocking crew mates.....you may want to reconsider.

You should probably go to hammockforums and do some reading before posting garbage like this then. The author of that article is clearly suffering from a preponderance on misinformation. He thinks he knows what he doesn't have a clue about. His model "hammock", per his own description, is a cotton rope, Brazilian-style hammock which nobody in their right mind would use for camping. He then, inexplicably, goes on to use an image of flat-sheet constructed hammocks instead of the "hippie fiber" knotted hammocks he's railing so hard against. He claims that if you search on Instagram for hammocks you will find all manner of bullshit hang methods. For someone who is trying to write an article on hanging hammocks he sure has shitty research methods. Given that the article was published on Nov. 3 and that the best source of hammock hanging info has been on the internet for at least a decade, I find it extremely difficult to put any stock in anything he has written there and you should probably know better.
