In response to the question of whether they were EPA certified, I received the following response:

This thread prompted my curiosity. Instead of the new Sawyer purifier, I purchased a First Need XLE Elite Water Purifier for $80 at Campmor using coupon code SAVE20 + free shipping.
kanoes gave it high praises and that's good enough for me and my needs.

Yeah, it says it was independently tested to EPA standards, but that's not exactly the same as EPA certification.

The bottle is 20 oz., so limited in that regard. Since the bottle holds the adsorption foam, it seems a gravity system would be limited to that. It would probably be best for solo use.

Yes sir, the certification sounds important but passing recorded standard is really the goal. As for rigging it for gravity feed I could see a tubing bulkhead on off valve in the bottom of the squeeze bottle. I bet gravity flow would work but it would be a sizable rig and with the amounts desired from a group gravity setup stressing the total filtered capacity. For large amounts of filtered water it is very had to beat a Sawyer Squeeze .1 micron or .02 micron (which can remove most viruses), inline filter setup.

 For a comparison First Need Purifier has 23000 ounce life, and has EPA certification.
Having converted First Need, Sawyer Minis and MSR Trailshot to gravity use, I expect it would not be difficult to do the same with a S type filter/purifier.
