While the netting is not detachable, is does roll up easily and has built-in ties to tie it in the rolled up position. Not sure if you're a hanger, but we use the Nemo to hang 2 hammocks stacked bunk-bed style, one on top of the other, in lieu of a tent. No bugs, protection from rain, and still a great view from your campsite. |

I am a soloist so don't qualify to answer questions on groups but the overall BEST in quality is Cooke Custom Sewing. Designed and made by a fellow tipper to last the long haul. |

butthead: "For simplicity I prefer no net with my tarp. Instead relying on chemicals and or smelly travelling partners to fend off da bugs! Will the bugs drive us mad that time of year without a net? I’ve only went once (last year) and it was Labor Day week. Bugs were not an issue, however it sounds like the black flies are thick in early June. |

Most of my trips are in June; usually 2 per year. Skeets and black flies can be nasty. IMO, the skeets are a bigger concern, especially at dusk. The black files can be hit or miss. But when they are out, they can be a bugger! |

I do treat my clothes with permethrin, and will pack some DEET wipes (often never used but good insurance). But everyone has a personal tolerance level! butthead |

Just a plain old flat tarp for me. I like the versatility over a shaped tarp. CCS is very difficult to beat for quality, lots of other makers can work well. If netting is a must, I'd go with separate tarp and add netting as needed. butthead |

I have used tarps for many years and I can honestly say I wouldn't go on a canoe trip without one, whether I travel solo or with a group. As far as the netting; I'd say that's dependent on the time of year or how concerned you are of bulk and weight. For spring and fall, Kelty's Noah's Tarp 9 has served me well. It's light, easy to set-up, and it's very affordable. The tarp's dimensions; Length: 108 in / 274 cm/Width: 108 in / 274 cm, and a pack weight of approximately two-pounds is very reasonable. Obviously for a larger group, you'd probably want to step-up the the Noah Tart 12 or the 16. I have tried to use just a "box net" strung under the Noah's Tarp, but it wasn't quite as slick as having a tarp with attached netting. Despite the NEMO Bugout Shelter's bulk and weight, it's a Godsend during peak bug season. It's a pleasure to be able to escape the bugs during dinner, or when just lounging, when the bugs are running wild in June and July. I don't have any experience with the Eureka VCS 16, but a removable net is a nice option. That said, the netting does roll up on the NEMO Bugout shelters as johndku mentioned. There's no disputing the superior quality of the CCS tarps, but the aforementioned tarps have served me well despite being a cheaper option. Hans Solo |

I have the Nemo Bugout. It works great only downside is the weight of it and the bulk of it. |

butthead: "I've never taken a netted shelter other than a tent. Rarely used a headnet. How long does the permethrin last? On a seven day trip do you have reapply? |
