Welcome to the forum kriley! There's an abundance of useful information to be found here. Regarding GPS units, the Garmin GPSMAP series works well in rugged conditions. I personally have the 62S and really like it, and my friend swears by his (now discontinued) 60CSX. Be sure to get one that accepts a chip to allow you to upload a map of the area that you will travel. And don't be afraid to buy used, it can save you a pretty penny.

Know your map and compass. I have GAIA on my iPhone and it works great up there.

Hey, kriley. Sign in and sign up to include the GPS Forum in your forum list here. Lots of info to search and research.
Also, ignore the inevitable comments from folks who may deride you about gps as if using one and possessing decent map and compass skills are mutually exclusive. For me, the 450 or so waypoints and tracks that I have saved from my Garmin 64st to my iMac in Garmin HomePort provide an excellent trip diary, a cool trip history map, and the answers to most group trip trivia questions.

Don't neglect to learn compass and map skills. It's actually very easy and I find it easier than a GPS when traveling in the BW.. The nature of BW travel doesn't make a GPS that important. I have a GPS and only use it occasionally to confirm my location.

Great advice. I too navigate by map using the GPS for occasional verification of my exact position. Navigate the same way that in Canada.

Hey guys, first time going to Quetico this summer and looking to purchase a new, inexpensive yet dependable GPS. Any suggestions?

I have the Garmin etrex 20 and it has been more than adequate for navigating. You can find GPS files for campsites and portage’s in Quetico that you can load directly on the unit using the Garmin software
