I received the tarp today. It's beautiful!
I have this bitter sweet feeling thinking about my upcoming trip and the sorrows of what Dan and his family are going through now.

Lately I have become more emotional as I age because of what life gives and takes from us. I truly appreciate the product that Dan and his wife have created and their smiles and positive outlooks in life will be protecting me and my loved ones under this magnificent piece of art.

Health and happiness to all.

I will make my first trip to the BWCA around August 14 into Mudro EP23. Will see the pictographs and hope to do a loop going counter clockwise. Dan's yellow tarp will be flying high! Stop by and say hello. Coldfeet

Midwest is out of CCS reflective cord and I need some before next weekend. I returned the paracord after listening to peoples advice here.

Would this work instead?

That will work. I like reflective stuff but in June by the time I need reflective cord it’s past 10 pm and I’m headed to the tent to get back at 4 fix coffee and go fishing.

Thank you for confirming that cord and I agree with it staying light late, but I want to just buy it once and I will use the tarp in other times of the year when there is less daylight.

I can't speak to that cord but does Midwest Mountaineering have the non-reflective CCS cord? I'd go with that if it's available.

You won't be sorry. In regards to telling the wife, it's always easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

I'm good at asking for forgiveness. I have an old 12x12 Kelty that will be used for other trips also.

I also picked up the stuff sack that helps keep the tarp off the ground and reflective rope. Can't wait.

My wife says she told me "No camping gear purchases this season." When the UPS truck showed up last week, she asked for an explanation. I said, "Sorry dear, I heard you say 'Yanney'."

Finally after a very long time I just ordered a CCS 10x12 1.1 tarp in yellow! Whoo Hoo! Buy once cry once! Just hope my wife doesn't find out because for every purchase I make she triples it!

Getting ready for my first trip in August.

I almost bought a new MSR tent this weekend from Rei with their sale going on BUT I found an REI Half Dome about 2 years old in great shape for $55. So my extra tent money went into the CCS tarp. I'm happy :)

Take it from me, You need to apply the 24 hour rule here. If she has not found out about it for 24 hours you are good to go. This old thing...I’ve had it for a while.

If my wife and my CCS tarps (have 4 of them) were on a train track and I could only save one of them...

Is it typical to put 20ft on the corners? I picked up some of the Zing-it but wasn't sure how much to cut. Should I prep a ridge line too? and how long is typical for that?

Congrats on new purchase! I have an 8x10 Yellow tarp that I bought from a member of this board a couple years ago and it is a great tarp. (thanks Jan!) I agree on getting the CCS cord, or something similar. Paracord is OK but you will need to adjust a couple times a day to keep tension. Some knots make it easier than other to do so, but still something to consider.

BnD: "Birdknowsbest: "I just picked up my 16*10 CCS tarp 1.1 oz with the ridgeline stuff stack. Seam sealing this week and setting up the ridge line this weekend. I also ordered 200 ft of reflective para cord and plan on putting 20 ft on each corner and the opposite side middles. Heading up in less than 2 weeks.

Buy it once, but it right. "

My advice DO NOT use paracord for any tarp rigging unless you like continuously tightening and adjusting your tarp. Paracord is nylon core rope that will elongate under tension and is really bad when wet. Use either double braided polyester(CCS cord is very good), dymeena (Zing it)and/or spectra (Blue Steel) cord with essentially Zero elongation wet or dry. Set your tarp snug and be done. "

I am only using the reflective cord for the tie outs on the corners. I am using the included yellow cord Dan sells for the ridgeline.

I have 50 ft for the ridgeline, and 20 ft at each corner and middle of each side. All of them are the yellow cordage that Dan sells.

Bcelect , good to hear from you. Hope all is well. I need to make sure I have or get the right cord, might call Dan today and order more.
I must begin to work on knot skills.
Love this forum, appreciate the advise from all.
Enjoy the holiday weekend.

OK, you will see after 1 trip. Experience is the best teacher.

Here is my yellow CCS 10x12 1.1 on the Kawishiwi River just after a pretty intense hail storm. I also have the ridgeline stuff sack! Along with my top and underquilt, the top 3 gear purchases I have made.

congrats on your risk & purchase. you have made an excellent choice. when you're setting up your bright tarp, is when you appreciate it's quality the most. have fun!

Another Happy Yellow tarp user here. Yellow brightens things up on a dreary day under the tarp.

I have the yellow 1.1 tarp as well and love it when it's dreary out. Note that on a hot sunny day it's not the best at shading the sun, and it can get pretty darn warm under the yellow tarp compared to the green, so set it up in a shady area on warm days.

All good responses. Thanks.

I think she reads these threads also and when I see her wearing a new outfit she tells me , “ oh that? It’s old”. I should have had the tarp delivered to my work!

You had to go and buy yellow? Now how are we going to tell mine from yours this fall? My daughter and I stayed dry under mine this past weekend on Lewey lake.
Congratulations.

Yes, Paracord is for the birds. And I believe that reflective cord is a bit abrasive so watch out if you use it on webbed loops.

I use zing-it in my hammock setup but would be leery of using it on a large community tarp. I personally have 20' of CCS cord on each corner and maybe 50' for the ridgeline. I also bring an extra four 20' hanks of CCS cord in my cordage bag in case I need to extend, along with a dozen or so MSR Ground Hog stakes. The helpful knots to know are the bowline, truckers hitch, sheet bend and prusik knot.

I'd invest in two 80 foot lengths of CCS tarp cord/rope for any tarp you choose to use. Works like a charm on both my CCS tarps; strong, light weight, and won't stretch when under pressure.
