Are you not wanting the CCS Barrel Harness? I purchased the CCS Quad Pocket a few months back and it is very comfortable. It also doubles as a decent canoe pack without the barrel. It's very versatile. It has a similar harness system as their hybrid packs. I would highly recommend. The outside pockets (on the sides and on top) can carry your stove, fuel, tarp, first aid kit, rain gear, cook kit, utensil roll, etc.

We have the GG harness. My wife usually carries the food barrel
Pack. She loves the GG harness and finds it way more comfortable than a portage pack.

We put our 30l barrel in a larger portage pack with the camping gear and cooking gear. Cuts down on one trip you need to make if you don't mind a heavier pack.

When weight distribution is applied correctly it's the most comfortable load I have carried on portages. I'll be 68 this year.

They specified that they don't want the CCS pack. I'm quite curious as to why not."

To each his/her own. But I agree and am curious as to why they mentioned this specifically. Sueb2b, would you care to enlighten us? I have 3 of them (2 60L and 1 30L), and don't see the shortcomings. I chose to not go with the pockets, thinking they would fit in the canoe easier and I already pack too much food and the pockets only invite more weight, lol.

I’m getting a 30L barrel. Thoughts on harnesses?

Prefer to not have the CCS barrel cozy. Want something that is somewhat comfortable for a longer or more challenging hike when hauling the provisions.

Thanks.

GG vapor flatbed harness, works on both sizes of barrels..30 & 60L
Great padding, easy to handle. No extra space for anything-it's just a harness.

We just ordered the GG Flatbed harness over the winter. Haven't had a chance to use it on a trip yet but it does seem to be very comfortable in my testing around the house. It fits the 30L barrel that we already had nicely. It will even stretch to fit a 20 gallon (75L) barrel that i picked up of craigslist for $10! Still need to pick up the 60L barrel for our trip in August. Even though it fits i think the 75L will be too big.

We liked the GG because of the adjustable straps for different size barrels.

I got the North 49 harness and I can't tell you how pleased I was.
I shopped all over Canoecopia this winter and put in my research time.
Then when it came time to order one, I found this one:
North 49

I just did a solo trip with this and my 30L barrel and was amazed.
It did everything the others were supposed to accomplish, and did it for 40 bucks.
It even has the lumbar cushion of the high dollar ones.

And it fits the 30L and 60L.

The CCS Quad Pack and a 60L barrel is my preference for 4 person, 5 day or more trip. All those side and top pockets are very handy (but it is easy to create a very heavy pack if not thoughtful about what you put in it!).

For 2 person and solo trips I switch to Ursacks (after a couple trips with bear vaults).

We have the plain CCS 30L pack, I like it but do wish we had the extra side pockets at times. No complaints of comfort really
