Looks like a good idea. I like the tent washer trick.

LED light switch
Menards has something like this for about $4.00. With the built in magnest a guy can have a washer on the outside of the tent and have a pretty decent ceiling light. The dimmable aspect is a neat feature... These will get a test run tomorrow for a canoe trip on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage …

I would not do a washer on the outside of the tent. That is unneeded wear and tear on one spot, if it holds at all. Most tents have netting that can hold a light at the top of the tent, or at least a hook. I got a LED light with a soft diffuser that can hang from a hook, or clothes line. It cost $10-15 but is much more useful than something intended to be mounted on a wall. Sometimes the functionality justifies the extra cost.

I go a whole trip and never use my headlamp or other light. I wouldn't worry about a small piece of steel and using the magnet though - just not in same spot every night. May have to get one just to see what other uses it has. Big tool boxes, cupboards, etc.
