I "think" when you mix the two together you can get away with a lighter thin walled container. Straight propane calls for the heavy steel guys....

Propane works fine in canister stoves. Bit higher heat output and lower temperature of vaporization allow it's use in cold temperatures. It's not used in backpacking stoves because of the weight of the thicker stronger canister.
Propane/butane mixes are intended to run better at lower temps than butane or iso butane. The adapters have been available for years and many use them to run the heavier but cheaper propane cans. I have an adapter and use it occasionally for vehicle based trips with Windpro/Rapidfire and some oriental clone stoves.

Has anyone used an adapter that allows you to use a Propane gas canister with your butane stove? I recently purchased an adapter that will make my Whisperlite Universal stove even more universal. The Whisperlite seems to run just fine on propane. Is there any reason to be concerned about running a stove on propane when it was designed for butane? I plan on only using the propane adapter in situations where other fuels are not available.

I thought by now someone would have chimed in.
I would think there is a good logical reason MSR and others would mix butane and propane in their canisters. But after some reading I cannot find a reason other than to maybe cut costs.

And further reading says that propane burns hotter which is good when you want to cook. As long as your stove functions properly with your adapter I would guess it's a good idea. I will wait for more responses with educated answers over mine.

I use those MSR fuel canisters and have seen the adapters on Ebay myself. I think I need to buy one and give it a try.

To your question...Butane is cheaper than propane, propane is easier to find, propane burns a little hotter, propane is better for high altitudes and colder temps. They mix the two gases for colder temperature and higher altitudes.
I’m not sure how different gases will perform in a stove that was designed for a certain gas. The jet size may or may not have to be changed, not sure. Being they are very similar gases I would think you would be fine.
