What suggestions do folks have for adding notes to Voyageur Maps? I quickly found out that Sharpie markers are not the answer!

Regular ball point pen, not a jell pen works on any of the waterproof maps. A mechanical lead pencil on all paper maps or Fisher maps.

Why not Sharpies? I’ve used them to mark many other waterproof maps of mine. I just bought my first Voyageur map last month and have not used it yet, but I just took 4 Sharpies and drew some lines and it worked ok. I just found I had to let it dry for several seconds before swiping my finger over it (green line). After that they seem permanent.

Appreciate everyone's succinct replies.

I initially tried a fine tip Sharpie and it wiped off within seconds. Second attempt included waiting multiple minutes for it to dry, and that also was an abject failure. My next stop was the bwca.com forum to see what the experts recommended. More experimentation to come...

As the others, I use a ball point pen. I've not had luck with gel pens. Voyageur maps are made of a kind of paper that only a ball point will work.
