This works OK solo or maybe two people if guyed out a little wider on the sides and farther in the back. At the time a storm was blowing rain in sideways, so this provided good shelter for me and equipment.

I'm wondering who here has pics of tarp set-ups w/o trees. This would be using the stick method, I guess, and looking for setups like canopies.
I've gone through the awesome "Show me your tarps" thread, but there are not a lot of "treeless" setups.
I've got poles, I'm just wondering what kind of setup works best

I take a painters pole just for that purpose. Very sturdy if you stake out the pole with 2 stakes. Next time I'll take a better picture of that setup, but here's one from a river trip last winter. My CCS is the blue and white one to the left. TW

The one in my picture was very solid, Amok. Of course, it's a catenary cut tarp, not a rectangular one. One of the reasons I set it up like that was that a storm was blowing in almost horizontally. Take yours out in the yard and give it a try.

Very cool Ozarker. I'm guessing the right piece of wood cut into a pole would work as good as the trekking pole?"
I'm certain it would. I use a telescoping Painter's pole that extends out to about 6.5'ft. I stick it in my chair bag. BTW, the chair is for non-portaging river trips.

I just finished sewing "pockets" into my tarp so I can use kayak paddles when I do not have trees. I'm eager to see how it works in a wind storm. (I think I got the idea from the Backpacking Light forum.)

Thanks op! I'm hoping I can try it out soon. I can't wait to be able to putter around the house and fiddle with my gear. I'm getting lots of great ideas on how to do this now :)

Its for a patio umbrella, I got it on ebay.

I had fun with my tarp this trip-- using it in several ways. For wind, for dryness over the fire (a first) and as a foyer for my tent (which was a mistake-- the rain fell onto the tent, and down the front of the tent into-- directly into the "foyer."
I had to extend the rope for a few of my set-ups. I keep a length of rope for that purpose stashed with the tarp. I used the logs around the fire, trees, and once, a slab of rock. It was interesting to experiment with the loops on the perimeter, keeping a good balance of tension and slack.
I call tarp experimenting "tarping". My daughter calls it an obsession.

here is a small one. its not perfect but it worked for the rainy night of my solo last fall.

Al little hard to see, but there is a pole at each high end. It's a noah 12 tarp, similar to your guide gear. Tie out each pole in two directions and it's a pretty stout setup.

 Kinda short on head room though!
No photos but a way I setup with poles is high ends to poles on the diagonal, opposite corners to the ground. In a diamond pattern.
