Took it out for a solo paddle on the Milwaukee River this morning. This is a picture of downtown Milwaukee. Not quite the same as paddling in the BW, but at least I was on the water.

I have been lusting after a Savage River for some time, very jealous!

yeah, the Deep Creek seems like a good choice for fishing
the Otegan, Savage, and Blackwater look wicked fast, would be interested to see how they stack up against my Wenonah Voyager

The canoe was free! But I had to buy a really expensive hat to get the canoe for free. At least that's what I told my wife. Prices are right on the web site. That's what I paid, saved about $300 plus on shipping by buying it while I was in Michigan watching the National Canoe and Kayak races on the Muskegon River.

Saved and saved, now I'm the proud owner of a Savage River Deep Creek. The canoe is even better than expected. Very nice speed, even with an inexperienced paddler up front. Turned well, not great,(about 3/4" to 1" of rocker) even in steady wind. Was very surprised at how stable it is. Initial and secondary stability are both very good with this canoe. My daughter could lean out over the gunnels and drag hands in water without any wobble. My wife that said she wouldn't go in a canoe because they are unstable. After watching our daughter be very comfortable in canoe, she decided that she would try. After half way across lake, she looked back and said she was enjoying the ride a lot. She is looking forward to many paddles in the future. Durability was a big question of mine. But I watched Savage River boats with the ultra light layup go down the Muskegon River all weekend without problems. The river is very shallow and rocky with a fast current. Talked with John Diller the owner of Savage River and he assured me of the durability, so we will see. A boat is made to be used. And last but not least, it doesn't hurt that is weighs about 32 lbs. Haven't weighed it myself yet, but will post weight after I do. Very pleased with my purchase.

Looks like a really nice canoe, glad you're happy with your purchase. They are not too far from where I live.

Very nice canoe. I saw them at Canoecopia and can understand your attraction to it.
Enjoy.

Congrats to you!!!! I am looking at a Savage River Blackhawk or Susquehanna, just have not paddled one yet. I am still dreaming and saving like you did.... Also saving for another solo;yet, the wife says that I better get the tandem first. After our second BWCA trip as a couple, she is hooked. I hope that your wife gets hooked as well or she will miss some great trips that you and your daughter will be taking together. Ha!

Congratulations! Looks like a great canoe. Nothing better than kids enjoying a canoe ride.

The Blackhawk and Susquehanna will definitely be faster than the Deep creek, but the front seat area is a little to narrow for me(and any of my tripping partners). I also like the length of the Deep Creek at 16'6" compared to the others being longer. There was a Susquehanna there when I picked up the Deep Creek, I have to admit that I eyed it up quite awhile, but in the end went with the Deep Creek. From what I've read and talked with people the Susquehanna is every bit as stable as the Deep Creek plus being faster. Just didn't quite have the room for a longer boat.

Thanks. The first thing my daughter said when I pulled up with it on the car was, "That is my boat too!". As I was paddling her around she just kept asking to Go Faster Daddy. It's great now that she is old enough to start enjoying my hobbies with me.

I'm still on cloud nine. I think about it all the time. What local lakes am I going to paddle this weekend? What is going to be my first entry point with it? What accessories am I going to add? Will I be paddling it solo or find someone to go with? Probably spending to much time thinking about it.
