For actual games, Try looking up "love letter", or "Sushi Go", on amazon. they are fun short card games that are really easy to understand, and they are cheap and small. Sushi go can also be found at alot of Target's

Harkening back to my scouting days, I remember we would on occasion "wood carve" with bars of soap. A fun activity, who could carve the best face or bird, etc. But maybe not the best if tent bound.

Depending on their age, I found it advantagous to offer some sort of prize after an activity. The prize can be mentioned before or be a surprise to the best knot tier, braclet maker, knife sharpener, whatever. Kept some focus on what is going on at hand.

We didn't shoot them when they were flying. Only when they landed. That way we could get a good look and only shot the ones with 1 black spot one the left wing.. They are vegetarians. And don't eat mosquitoes.. On top of that we only shot the dumb looking ones. We were very selective.
Besides that.Do you really think a few dragon flies are gonna put a dent in the mosquito population in the BW...
We were even checked by the dragon fly police once and they were ok with it. They even joined us for fried dragon flies that night as we would never waste what we harvest.

Most boys scouts have pocket knives, how about a whittling session. Teach them how to make wooden spoons. What kid doesn't like playing with knives?

Or make a deep woods version of marbles, but the boys have to make up their down marbles by painting stones.

Just an observation. . .wouldn't shooting air rifles be prohibited at camp sites in BWCA? I know guys around here that can go through several hundred BB's in their guns in a couple of minutes. That's a lot of BB's "left behind".

No, but the ones at my campsite are going to eat the mosquitos at my campsite. A few years ago we had some spectacular displays with 30 or more dragonflies buzzing our campsite each night. They were eating and we didn't get bitten.

Maybe dragonfly bbq is great. But I have a spot on my left shoulder and am a vegetarian.

To respond to the original post. We bring dice for farkel, cards that have how to tie a different knot on each one, some art supplies, and penny whistles to make some music. But we spend most of our time just looking at the wilderness and taking pictures.

I believe it's no shooting (firearms) around campsites. They are bb pistols. I don't see the harm of it. And to get really really picky , don't grouse hunters leave a trace behind with those plastic wads in their shotgun shells.

Normally dragon flies at 20 paces involves a little alcohol.i can guarentee we leave no trace of that.

Andy... I will say a prayer tonite for all the dragon flies that I have caused to leave this earth early.

He'll I might even change my ways.

I apologize for getting off topic. I would have to vote with yogi on this one. A few BBs left behind in the grand scheme is nothing. I have no idea if a BB gun would be prohibited in camp like other real guns. I think the law was written for rifles and shotguns. Hunting with shotguns leave 1000s of BBs, still this is not a problem for me. It is a legal activity that is controlled by the DNR. Just my .02

I just thought of another interest for the kids. Teach them map reading and how to read a Topo map. There is plenty of things to learn about this when hunkered down under a tarp. Then when it stops raining go on an outing with their maps and compasses.

One of the guys that comes up with us every year brought air pistols a few years ago. Thinking that the rule was that he could not fire them in camp we told him he would have to use them 150 yards from a camp site.

So the next year he brought a sling shot with really large ball bearings. We told him that we were pretty sure that ball bearings the size of marbles lying around was not going to fly.

Last year he brought a pistol style crossbow. He took one shot, the arrow hit a rock and flew to the right nearly hitting someone. We have now "banned" all of the above at the camp sites.

WE have a scout leader one year teach the kids self rescue in canoes. They really got a kick out of that and it chewed up an entire afternoon.

Simple solution: leave him at home.

can't leave him. . .he's the one that teaches the kids knots, sling chairs, canoe rescue, etc. We should be good. I think he has run through all his weapons at this point.

So dragonflies are flying around eating mosquitos and you're shooting them? Do you think that the mosquitos have it too hard or something?

Sling chairs, tell me more of this magic..

Thanks for all the ideas, I was looking/hoping for more than card games and more scout/out door type stuff...

I didn't even think of knot tying.. Ropes and knots I can do with my eyes closed with my fire gloves on... Heck I have even tied knots under water with heavy gloves on.. I will for sure bring some length of rope with me...

Knife sharpening is another great idea...

Myself and my son could fish 24/7 wet or dry, but not all kids enjoy dropping a line...

please keep it the ideas flowing..

Start a fire in the rain without matches. Hike a shore line, hill or island. Collect and baton fire wood.

the cool part of this thread is it points out that there is no need to bring "things" to occupy time in the BWCA. . .even in the rain

this from the ad promoting national forests for kids.. . .

"Nature gives teens the ability to explore, use their imagination, discover new animals and plants, and engage in adventurous play. Being in nature frees them from their crazy, scheduled days and offers the ability to get lost in something totally unmanaged, unexpected and utterly surprising. Nature instills a peace and calmness they can’t experience in their daily lives, and the more they discover the natural world around them, the more they will feel connected to the world and better understand their relationship to it."

Best thing we can do for our kids is leave the electronics and games at home and turn them loose!

The sling chairs are neat but finding the poles that are already dead and down may be a challenge and you might need a bunch of them with several kids.
Paracord bracelets might be good knot tying for under the tarp and out of the rain. Paracord bracelets

Towards the end of Sept we will be bringing a group of you Scouts into the BWCA.

I'm looking for input regarding lightweight and small board games type stuff that can be played while under a tarp if it rains..

Be sure you buy the plastic cards. Cribbage board, Dice game called Farkle, and some Yatzee scorecards. I would also bring some rope sections and practice knot tieing.
