Years ago I bought two Cabella's goretex jackets. They are the kind that have zippers in them for a polarfleece liner. I also bought a pair of the goretex pants. I have had them all for over 5 years. I use them for work and rec. I find them very breathable as they have a mesh lining. Also, with the Cabela's brand clothing, if it falls apart for other the wear and tear they will replace it no questions asked. I have done this with other items of their branding. They were over $100 per jacket but I have 5 years in them, and the pants, and they show no signs of wear. I wear the green jacket almost all year (with liner in during the winter). The blue jacket is for church.

I will have to look into one and see what I can come up with. Thanks! I understand the gore tex its self does what it says it will, I just wasn't sure if the quality of construction of the jackets might vary from brand to brand. My assumption is that rain gears only as good as its weakest point. And if one brand skimps on their seam construction then your getting wet lol.

I have them from Arc Teryx and Marmot, but I would also buy Patagonia, Mountain Hardware and other quality manufacturers. I usually keep an eye out on Sierra Trading Post for a deal. I tend to be rough on gear and if I get a fire ember burn in a $400 Gore Tex jacket I get pretty pissed off. But, if I get a fire ember burn in a $400 jacket I paid $200 for it's a little more palatable. Like other have said, Gore Tex is Gore Tex.

I've got an older North Face Mountain Light jacket that I have had since 1990 that is still going strong. Although I don't use it as much for backpacking or canoeing as it is so heavy and bulky compared to my Mountain Hardwear rain coat.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GORE-TEX
Had my share of Gore-Tex jackets and as Andym mentioned now use REI E-Vent.
Kimtah, owned by SOB and loaned to me several times convinced me to buy a Rhyolite. Gore-Tex may last longer but I prefer the better breathability of E-Vent. More comfortable to me, used in lots of rain last year, best I've owned.

I need some advice on what the best gore tex jacket for my Bwca trip in late may would be. I will be layering so a lightweight jacket for a shell will be fine. Durability is key to me. Does anyone have any recommendations?

My recommendation would be to patiently look for an Arcteryx Theta LT jacket. Discontinued, but can still be found on eBay. The hood can zip into the collar.

Not necessarily true. Yes, the fabric is the same, but the quality of the build is not the same from manufacturer to manufacturer. In fact, it is not even close.
Get an Arc'teryx product and you will not be disappointed.

For me, breathability is key and after years with a Gore Tex shell, I switched to an REI jacket with eVent fabric. To me, it seems like it breaths better than Gore Tex. That exact jacket has been replaced in REIs line but I would also look at eVent jackets.

I have a Cabelas brand gore tex. it is ok, but I wish it had pit zips. get pit zips!

Columbia sells a nice jacket and pants made of a water proof material called Omni-tech. It is good in all day rain storms and holds up well. I bought it at an outlet here in MPLS and is still available.

How do you feel the Kimtah fits? I'm usually a medium but have had to order up a size in rain jackets sometimes for layering underneath.

VaderStrom, I'm short, round, and overweight. 5ft 6in, 47 chest, 18 1/2 neck, 60 wrist to wrist. Son's old style (5 years old), Kimath is XXl and dwarfs me. My Rhyolite purchased last spring is XL and fits trim but comfortably worn over a Woolrich Buffalo Check shirt .

I was going to make the exact same recommendation, but decided to scroll through to make sure someone else didn't say it first.
I loved my REI rain jacket. Mine had to be euthanized (along with the majority of my backpacking gear - Mountainsmith pack, Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag) after my neighbor's toilet overflowed and flooded his apartment, and soaked through the walls getting everything on the floor of my closet tainted with sewage water.
I replaced it with a North Face rain jacket, which is really good but is heavy and isn't as comfortable as the REI was. I wish I had just gotten another REI like my old one.
Now I also have a light weight REI rain jacket that I just layer with a small fleece if it's cold. The rain jacket serves its purpose admirably, which is to keep everything underneath it from getting wet.
I've had decent luck with low-cost (no Gore-Tex) rain gear from Bass Pro.

I have the cabelas MT050 quiet pack shell jacket and pants. They've been bomb proof for me in cool and cold weather. Only camo patterns are available, so that might be a drawback for you.

I have used a Cabelas rain suede top and bottom in their Dry-Plus for gotta be going on 10 years. Been perfectly happy and fine with it. It's camo as well. Pretty sure I picked it up out of their Bargain Cave....

German Flecktarn Goretex Parka. I'm cheap and dry in heavy rain. Used it for seven years so far but not for hot summer. I use it a lot but not July August. We trip in late May and it fits the bill for me. There have only been a few times in ten years that I peeled off to just a silk tee shirt underneath. It's not "packable" but makes a great outer shell for that time of year.
