How's the expected Ice Out date looking for 2017 around Ely?

I'm no expert, but I'm going to guess April 22.

Fall lake - Ely
Earliest, March 27, 2012
Latest, May 19, 1950
Median Ice out date, April 28 - So the rest is guess work.

The ice around Ely is pretty thick and pretty solid (not rotten frozen slush). It got thicker last week with cold nights and no snow on the lakes. With no snow, it could also start melting as soon as the temps get higher. Of course, it's also possible that we could have an early spring storm dumping a lot of snow that would slow things down. So, cutting to the point - there's no way at all to know when ice out will be. Nonetheless, I think average dates (late April for most Ely area lakes) are a good guess. Don't bank on that though.

I think the temperature in Ely this morning is around 0. April 28 might be about right, but I'm guessing for May.

Looking like early May at this point, but it could all change.

Really hoping for mid April! Planning to launch 4/20 in LIS north, but I may just have to do the Sioux Hustler Trail if the ice doesn't cooperate.

I agree. I am hoping to drop into Wood lake on 4/20. If not I'm going to loop the Angleworm trail.

Only 20 inches or less of ice on most of the lakes in the Ely area, with no snow. The forecast for the next 10 days is pretty good, so we can lose quite a bit of ice unless some freak storm drops a foot or more snow.
I don't think that mid to late April ice out is too unreasonable to predict, barring unforeseen circumstances.
