what do people use for checking the forecast 30mi or so, up the gunflint?
Check the weather forecast for Ely?
It doesn't make sense to check for Grand Marais, because it's influenced too much from the lake.

It does help to check Grand Marais for wind direction. I have found the weather from Saganaga east to be influenced by east winds off Superior. It is often cold and misty there while Ely is enjoying sunny weather. An east wind off the big lake often brings several days of cool wet at a time in the early season, say May through June. Most of my trips are in June and I am always prepared for 40 degree wet weather.
