Did that portage last year. Not exactly easy - it's pretty narrow and there were definitely some wet/muddy spots and rocks to twist your ankles on, etc. But certainly not a killer or anything. I think I remember the landings on both ends being fairly tight if you've got 2 or more canoes and gear strewn about.
Enjoy your time on Lynx...very pretty lake with some nice campsites.

I just came back from a solo and went through there. The beaver dam really is a small lake now. From Pauness its uphill, before the beaver dam there were three large trees, two together then one across the path but you are able to go over them. Also a small spring on that side also formed a mud pit in the path so skirt to the side. After the beaver dam its a bit down and up hill, but not long to Shell.

Talk about your proverbial kick in the groin... I feel for you buddy. I did something similar on the Oyster-Hustler portage going back for the bait king...found later that it was tucked under a pack on the completed end, so I waded through the chest deep water twice, for nothing.

quote MikeinMpls: "On a solo trip I brought the canoe over from Shell to Pauness, but I thought I forgot my paddle at the Shell end. As the canoe was already across (at the Pauness end), I swam the small pond to the other side, but couldn't find my paddle. I swam back and I found my paddle.... I left it at the Pauness end of the pond. Duh

Long, but an easy walk, plus the short paddle/wade across the beaver pond. So much better than the portages I just took from Round Lake to Gillis.

I was up there this spring. You will still need to load the canoe and cross the beaver pond to the remainder of the portage. I'll be heading in on the same day. Maybe I'll see you!"
