You said that you will have some beginners on your trip. Please be aware that you can experience some very big water on Knife lake up by Thunder Head Point. Please wear you PFDs and be safe. I just got back from that area three weeks ago and we had 3' rollers in that area. Just my safety tip for that area. That being said I love that area, Robbins Island is a great stop off point for a late lunch stop.

Fisher Maps
Check it out - F 10, F 11 or F 31 has the entire Ely area on one map.
Possibly F 19 and F 12 depending on how far you go to the east.

Grandma you had said earlier that you may go in to the numbered Lakes around Memorial Day this year. We were over on comings and crab over Memorial Day during the rainy season. Only time we caught fish was when it was raining. How's the fishing been on Ensign recently?

We ended up over on Moose and east along the border. It rained most of the weekend - no fishing for me!

I also like bhouse's route. A twist is to wind down to Snowbank and use the portage from Snowbank to Moose EP. I tend to avoid Ensign because if it's overuse.

What Bill and BHouse46 said.......but I would take a short side trip up top Amoeber, Cherry and Topaz before heading back west. They are some of my favorites and would be almost without visitors that time of the season. Ensign is busy but in Sept - not too bad.
Great route plan - heck, I would beg to go along if I didn't already have a trip then.

They are deep lakes - Amoeber has a 100 ft hole - my son had pretty good luck - but he almost always does - depending on time of year, water temp, his patience level and bait. He often trolls or uses a slip bobber lindy rig and leaches. I only take pictures of the fish, send him out of camp down the lake to clean them and return with filets clean, rinsed and ready for me to cook.

How's the fishing in Amoeber, Cherry, and Topaz?

We are going in at Moose Lake entry point September 3rd. Will be spending 7 days and 6 nights. Group of seven plus one black lab. Beginners and moderately experienced at fishing.

Can anyone suggest a good route for that time of year? Yes we would like to have fish for supper.

One of my favorites. Moose to Knife/Kekekabic/Ima and out through Ensign to Moose. Lots of great sights, reported fishing, and side trips galore.
