Sawbill is a good choice. 2 years ago a friend had torn up his knee in a skiing accident and couldn't portage. We base camped on Sawbill and had a great week. Paddle up Kelso and find the Dolemen. Do the Kelso/Alton/Sawbill loop. Paddle up to Handle lake. Lots to do, but not too athletic.
Be careful if you get on Alton -- it's big and the wind kicks it up pretty good.

Take him to Seagull Lake. There are lots of things to see including the Palisades. Paddle to the south end of the lake to base camp. We have had moose either walk through our camp, swim by our camp or walk near our camps every year on the south end of Seagull. I should say we also go in mid September which affect the movement of Moose.

“Nice and relaxing” will depend on the weather and timing as anything else. I’ve paddled the often rough waters of Saganaga when it’s as calm as glass. The secret is to get up early and paddle before the breeze picks up.

What about Poplar Lake to Horseshoe? Its 3 portages but easy portages. Horseshoe is a great lake for Moose. You could day trip to Vista or Caribou. Easy and fun and beautiful area.

I thought about this, too, but I think if he only wants a four-hour paddle in and one very short portage (like Sawbill to Alton), it might be more than they are bargaining for.
Another possibility would be East Bearskin to Alder, possible side trips into Pierz and Canoe. That is a nice area, and small lakes.

Any of the close-in lakes - Knife, Sea Gull, Lake One, Fall to Basswood, Moose to Birch. When we have a group where a couple of us are not as capable as the rest - we make sure there are designated "grandma" packs. I am usually the more decrepit member of the crew. They are the right size and weight for me - and those are mine to carry - the "kids" get any of the others.

I recall someone telling me about an 80+ year old guy had been offered a chance to go along on a northwoods trip, but was advised against it, due to his health. He said that he couldn't think of a better way to go, and went despite the advice. He was still around to treasure the memories of his trip.

Don't have a recommendation, but I hope you have a great time planning and tripping with your dad. It makes me smile that he is still going after life experiences; able....and willing!

My brother and I took my mom to Knife Lake when she was 85 or 86. She paddled, portaged and helped in the campsite. One of my all time favorite trips. Wrote a short article in the BWJ about it.

such 'milestone' stuff. a short drive from Sawbill is Baker Lake entry: pack a lunch for a leisure paddle up Kelly, or even tackle 65 rods to Jack Lake, and back is a nice one in relatively shallow waters. mayhap, a moose sighting.

We did Sawbill in 2009 for our first canoe trip after Spartan1's kidney transplant. We were looking for an easy trip, and we had a wonderful time.
