Hey Guys!

My crew and I are getting excited for our annual trip. Going out of Ely this year, tried the Grand Marais side and what can I say, we missed the Bucky Burger.

We're headed out of EP 14 Mid August for 5 days. In a previous year we visited Fat Lake, and we all loved it's beauty. We want to return there and explore the lakes in the area. I'm wondering if anyone has any must hit spots in this area. The plan is to explore around the area, day trip and maybe move out of Fat lake(if we get the campsite).

Any natural sights to see? Falls? Cliff jumping spots?

I’ve been through fat years ago. No info for you. I did some research on it though. I think I have a lake I need to revisit! Thanks for the heads up!

I was there last summer, in August. Bring the deepest diving spoons you can find. The lake trout are a long way down in the late summer.

We came in via the unmarked portage from slim. Are you familiar with this time saving route?

Pvanvoor, I'm planning to hit that unmarked portage for the first time on June 10th. Any coordinates or landmarks to keep an eye out for on the Slim side?

There are some coordinates on another thread but it is fairly well worn.

The portage landing is almost directly across from the southern campsite on Slim. When I went thru there a few years back I put a rock churn at the landing but you can't count on that now.

On our most recent trip we went thru Slim to head back to EP 14 from Snow Bay and slim seemed like a very cool lake but we just passed thru. Nothing real significant sticks out as far as natural features between Loon and Snow Bay but again, Slim seemed to have something neat about it.

I took the Slim-Fat portage last July and the rock cairn wasn’t there, or I missed it. Although, I don’t know how I could have missed it as I was scouting the shoreline on the east side of Slim from about 15 feet out trying to find the portage. The good news is I found it just south of where the little creek dumps into Slim from Fat. It was a really rough landing as there were downed trees all over the shoreline and it was tough to get my solo canoe in close enough to get out of the boat. The portage goes straight up a short, steep incline and then banks right, then left and from there it’s pretty easy to follow. I was on Fat Lake in less than 20 minutes. The portage is much easier to spot up on the Fat Lake end. It saves you tons of time and a few tough portages so it’s well worth it. Caught a Laker on Fat within an hour of getting to the lake. I wish I would have stayed more than one night on Fat Lake.

I am familiar with the secret portage off of Fat.

We found it accidently while camping directly across from fat lake on the Western side.

Good stuff guys, thank you as always.
