You’re totally right. If you’re heading to the east side, your best bet for the night before is the Duluth Pack store in Duluth on your way up, they’re open until 9. I’ve picked up at 5:30 am and 9:30 pm on the Ely side, courtesy of VNO.

Okay, is it just me, or can you pick up your permits way earlier and later over in Ely?
From my VERY limited experience, it seems as though I can get my permit as late as 9-10pm the night before in Ely, and if I wanted to drive up the morning of, I could pick up my permit at 6am or so if I wanted. (Thinking VNO).
....and over on the Gunflint/Sawbill side the outfitters close down at 5pm and don't open until 8am...
Am I dreaming, or is this the case w/all outfitters?

The Sawbill Outfitters web site says they are open from 7 to 9 and that sounds about right. I know I have been in their store as late as 8 pm.

Up the Gunflint most have hours of 7am to 7pm (at least the ones I've used) and VNO in Ely is 5am to 10pm during the peak season.
