Day 1 will be the easiest of the 3 travel days if you stop at Clear Lake. I think it only took me 2 hours to get from Clear Lake to the campsite right by the EP portage. If you start early in the morning you will be on Clear well before noon and nay feel like pushing on to one of the river campsites. Easy to make that decision on the fly based on how the day is going and how you are feeling. On all but one of my solos I have pushed on much further than I had planned on Day 1. If you do push further on Day 1 you’re 3rd day could be short enough that after setting up camp on Little Gabbro you’d be able to go explore Gabbro. Since you are ending at Little Gabbro and not starting there be aware that the portage landing is mismarked on some maps. I think some maps show it on the eastern side of that bay but it’s really on the western side. Maybe do a search on this site about that topic as there have been discussions on it before. It was about 15?years ago that I used the Little Gabbro entry point. |

The triangle really makes it easy to decide on the fly as to how far you want to go before stopping to camp. My first day was a beautiful day at the beginning of Oct and I just kept going and ended up going further than I had planned First day I went up the South Kawishiwi and finally stopped to camp on an island where the N and S Kawishiwi split. 2nd day I went down the North Kawishiwi and camped on Clear Lake and then the 3rd night I camped at the small site near the EP and it was a 5 min paddle to the EP the last morning. The Little Gabbro and South Kawishiwi parking lots are close enough to each other that I may start at one and finish at the other if I do it again. |

If you had your "druthers"...which EP would you start a KT loop at? South Kawishiwi, Little Gabbro, Lak One or North Kawishiwi--or a different one? Since it is a no-reservation time of the year I love the flexibility of choice and would love to hear some opinions. |

This is what I think I will do. I have entered S.K. #32 before-but never done that loop and have never been to Little Gabbro, so this looks really like a fun loop. I think I may head from 32 to Clear Lake the 1st day. Looks like only 4-5 hours? Then over near the split on day 2 and into Little Gabbro on day 3 for a quick exit out of #33 in the morning. If I recall its only a couple mile walk to get back to may car. It actually looks like a real easy and relaxing paddle--without a overboard amount of miles per day. Does this pace/loop make sense? |

wxce1260: "Going on a 3 night solo this Thursday (10/6). I'm figuring on paddling the Kawishiwi Triangle with my Old Town Pack. Was that you who asked me if the island campsite near the intersection of the N and S Kawishiwi rivers was open on Friday last week? We were camped further down the S Kawishiwi last Wed-Sat. Hope you enjoyed your trip! |

landoftheskytintedwater: "Yes, that was me! And you were right the wind was nasty. I turned around and camped back closer towards the entry point. Had a great time though. Once the wind died down on Sunday it was downright beautiful.wxce1260: "Going on a 3 night solo this Thursday (10/6). I'm figuring on paddling the Kawishiwi Triangle with my Old Town Pack. |
