something to be said for taking a long walk in the woods! i personally thing the portage from missing link to round is worse than the tusc portage. it may be shorter but it has so many boulders...always have to watch the footing.

I agree, Tuscarora is just long. Missing to Round is very rugged. So is Missing to Snipe.

We did this portage last summer on a 95 degree day, no wind, very buggy and needless to say it wasn't something I want to repeat anytime soon. If it wasn't so hot it might not have been so bad.

As others have already alluded to.... I think the fact that it's over 1 mile long is what immediately grabs everyones attention? And, that does automatically qualify it as one of the tougher trails you'll encounter in the BWCA . But, the trail is mostly a very nice path. The hill climbing out of Tuscarora lake is the only noteworthy challenge.

Long, hot and buggy are my memory of it from 2006. I recall a bit of up and down and a low section past a bog/dried pond (where we were attacked mercilessly by mosquitos). I suppose if it's cool out and not in the heart of bug season, it wouldn't be so bad aside from the length. It's otherwise a very well used/beaten trail.

A good size uphill to start from tuscarora to Missing link. Its not too bad otherwise

We went through there last August. Bugs were not bad then. On the long portages, we "leap frog". We carry our loads about 1/3 of the way and then go back for the next load. I wouldn't let the length concern you unless you have a tendency to bring way too much stuff. We double portage with no pack heavier than 45 lbs.

The portage from Tuscarora was well used, not very technical just 400+ rod.

I remember going from Tuscarora Lake to Tuscarora outfitters the last morning of our trip and it seemed to be fairly easy all the way out. I've done some difficult portages in the past so this is why I think this way.

Some people think anything over 100 rods is difficult.

To each their own!

Just Long. Can be a bear if it rains alot as sections get muddy. Long descent into Tuscarora Lake. Good climb if you are going the opposite way.

Fairly easy portage. It's long but goes by quick. Make sure you are clothed well though, the mosquitoes are relentless.

Hmm. Maybe there will be a head net in my gear. Otherwise, doesn't sound TOO bad.

Probably why it isn't memorable.

My father tells me we used take this portage, 428 rods, when going into Tuscarora, but he has no memory of it. Neither do I. When you are young, and someone else is doing the navigating, you come across a memory in surprising places.

If Frost River is too low, this will be my alternate route. Can you tell me anything about the portage?

one of my favorite trails. Not hard, just a bit long. Solve the buggy problem by tripping early in the year or fall.

I've done it a few times - relativley easy if you are not going in too heavy. It can get a little greasy when wet. The first 200 yds from Tuscarora to Missing Link has some elevation gain.
