Use the grates left by previous campers.

The Purcell grills are expensive, but excellent. You can make do with grates stolen from grills, refrigerators, stoves etc. If you plan on regular Q trips and fire based cooking I'd make the investment in a Purcell grill. If this is a one off re-purpose.

I use the Purcell trench voyageur. Excellent quality, lightweight, no sharp edges, and stainless. Won't rust, and because it is tubing, cools quickly. Also just fits in the bottom of my underseat bag.

I'm a minimalist. I borrow the grate out of my Coleman suitcaste stove.

Purcell...although if this is your first trip I wouldn’t invest that much into until you are sure you are going back consistently.

Be careful with the refrigerator shelf idea, there have been people made sick from using those. Make sure you know what it is made out of, many weren’designed for exposure to heat, some have cadmium or toxic in them that are given off when exposed to heat.

T" I appreciate all the responses. Good info on not using refrigerator shelves. Thought we could just buy a replacement grill grate...... but I know my son is thinking of scrapping out his grill....................HMMMMMM, I might steal that grate! SHHHH "Don't tell him" FISHONFISHOFF

Since this is our first trip to Quetico, I looking for best options on a cooking firegrate. We are planning to single portage and move every day so weight should be considered. I saw a tripod with round grate and also saw the 3 piece fold up grill top. What do you guys use. This will be a group of 6 people. Thanks

I have a grate from a medium size wall mount oven. It has worked great (GRATE?) in quetico for every trip, I cant see paying for a grate when there are so many serviceable ones for free. I snoop around every time I'm at the dump looking for more. I stick it outside the liner in the food pack. Last tripto quetico I didn't see any grates left behind which is unusual.

Yes I bought one last year and they get a 100% endorsement from me.

Buy three or four packs of these and build your own grate. They don't weigh much and very compact for packing when you put them all together.

I carry more as back up to stove than primary cooking one of these.
Boiled water and grilled fish on it. Use it as a pot stand next to stove as well.
