We have a 6-day trip planned to Quetico in mid-September. Six adult men with many trips to the Q.
The plan was to put in at Stanton Bay, head south to Sturgeon and wander around some before coming back out. That plan is questionable now because of the fires, and the fire ban may make us punt even going to the Q this fall and go to BWCA instead.
Hopefully, there will be some major rain up there in the next few weeks, but if not, does anyone have some suggestions for a trip alternative south of the border that gives us at least a decent opportunity to not run into crowds of other canoeists. We haven't been to the BWCA much over the last 20 years, but the only trip there that did not involve lots of lakes with full campsites was one out of Nina Moose River north up to LLC and that may have only been true because it was in late October.
Leaving out of either Ely or the Gunflint Trail is ok.

Closest I could recommend is one of the PMA's. You might need to do some bushwhacking on some of the "portage trails", but will get the privacy.

Exactly. The fire was 7400 acres in a 1.2 Million acre park. There are plenty of safe options to consider. Fire is smaller after recent rain too.

thanks all. i was just wanting to have a back up plan for worst case scenario. looks like the rain may be helping out up there. very glad to hear that news.

Why give up on Quetico just because of fires near preferred entry point? Use another entry point and have a great trip.

I think I'd rather burn than trade a Q trip for one in the BWCA. :)
