I was told by a Ranger that "If you are caught without a permit on the other side of this portage, you're a dead man."

Does anybody know where I can find some sort of list or map that includes portage names for those portages that have names?

This little booklet has many of the lake and portage names in it along with how they got their name.

It's a good policy to avoid Quetico Portages with names! :)

Yah, ya gotta have a black robe to do the black robe portage and it takes a dead man to do the portage des mortes.

Some names are odd. Kenneybass, for example, the shot dangerous portage, goes from Kenney to Kawnipi and should be called Kekkeykaw.

The Chrismar Adventure map for Quetico (the official map) shows names for portages that have names. It doesn't include every name you might hear people use (like Yellow Brick Road for the Bayley-Burke portage), but it has the most common or traditional.

Finding any portage at 8:00 am not bad as I do - including Yum Yum where we had a coffee break at the precipice in the middle - and any portage after mid-afternoon an s.o.b. - I'd suggest they all have a morning and afternoon name.

(First trip with Scouts was through Side into Kahs. Started portage after 5:00 - not sure when - but it was dark in August when we reached campsite - island near Yum Yum portage since burned over. The Scouts and I combine the other adults last name and deathmarch whenever we talk about that trip. Don't ask but through circumstances I quad portaged - including all three Grummans - and went to Kevlar ever since. I suppose I should call it heart attack portage since one of the Scouts asked if I was having one.)

Thanks, I'm going to buy the booklet and take it to the Q this summer.

The story is that a tree fell on a voyageur.

Yum yum is just plain a misnomer.
