The portage on the west end of Oliphant is pretty easy. Mostly flat.....just a slight hump up/over. We checked out the rapids where the Pickerel river flows out to Sturgeon and went on the portage a little ways. It is narrower and has more ups/downs and doesnt look used as much as other.

Ditto ... the river route is scenic, but several picky little portages.

I was reading a review of the West portage (on another website) and it said at about the 1/2 way point there was a large swampy area with thigh deep mud. So I was thinking the Pickerel river portages may have less mud to them.

Portage on west end of Oliphant would be much easier and faster. Mud should not over top your boots, plus it puts you into Sturgeon much farther south. I would only use the portage around the falls if I were heading out through the Deux Riviere.

We are heading out that way but it's no big deal coming from lower down on Sturgeon.

Thanks for all the good info so far guys.

Did the west portage last September and it had been raining on and off for a couple of days. No real mud to speak of and if you catch it during a dry stretch, you might not see any mud at all. Even with mud, I find it to be less effort than the river portage series (even going down stream).

It was a little muddy at each end but I dont recall any bad spot in the middle.....and we were there at a fairly wet time.

Which way is the best/ easiest portage to do? The portage from Olifaunt to Sturgeon or the Pickerel River portages out of Olifaunt to Sturgeon?
