-Equal parts of regular M&Ms and Reese's Pieces -Roasted almonds. Either no salt or light salt. -Roasted cashews, light salt. -Whatever dried fruit is readily available. I prefer Craisins to raisins, but dried pineapple is my favorite. -Coconut Chips Put the almonds in a bowl, drizzle just a little bit of olive oil then sprinkle a little chili powder (and a touch of salt if you got the no-salt almonds) and toss them in the bowl to coat them in the chili powder. You can use other spices if you prefer. I like straight up chili powder with a small bit of rosemary and a tiny pinch of cayenne. Go easy with all the herbs and spices, they'll blast the flavor out of your mix if you overdo it - you just want a hint of essence. Spread the almonds out on a cookie sheet and put it in a 350 degree oven for a few minutes (doesn't take long) ... you're not trying to roast the nuts as much as you are trying to cook down the raw nature of the spices. Chili powder is pretty funky in its raw state, but once it's been heated a bit, it develops magical properties. Conversely, you can toast the chili powder in a skillet and skip the last part, but I think oil, salt, and spice all cooking together does something that you can't accomplish by skipping the roast. Mix it all together in a gallon freezer bag, and feast away. The best part of this is that you can add a spice that you know everyone will hate to keep their mitts off your GORP. |

Then we have a session where everyone mixes their own and labels their zip locks. Some people go for different mixes through the trip. Some go for consistency. And woe unto the person who accidentally dips into my wife's stash. Fortunately, I never have the urge because..... cranberries, really? |

- about half regular trail mix - about half spicy hot trail mix - add peanuts and cashews - add yogurt covered raisins (unless its really hot weather) - maybe add more M&Ms In cold weather I've also added in a bag of those red fiery Cheetos to really spice it up and pack in the calories. Given the other comments, though, I think I will try Trader Joe's. |

A sweet & salty mix of peanuts, milk chocolate caramel bites, cashews & M&M'S Milk Chocolate Candies. Trader Joe's for raw nuts, dried fruit..they have an amazing variety. Honey Sesame cashews are addicting. |

I also make a mix to go with breakfast. Raisins, banana chips, coconut chips and almonds. Add chocolate covered sunflower seeds to any mix. I found them at Trader Joes. They are good. Coconut chips, almonds and milk chocolate chips taste like an Almond Joy. |
