Happy Easter to you all. I am planning on my first trip in June and have been updating and soaking up information like a sponge. I have a couple of questions though. I bought a Fry-Bake Expedition and Alpine kit to bring along. I have been using the Expedition in the house and found it does stick even with oil in the bottom. Is this a big issue in nature's kitchen?

I am also wondering if the NOLS book on cooking is a resource worth looking into as I found that they do use the Fry-Bakes. I think they also talk about something called bulk rationing as well, which interests me.

I enjoy cooking and the bag and boil methods, though convent and a few will be included, will not be my preferred method of cooking. I am thinking of doing things like pastas and rice and bean dishes but don't know the best way to add protein like beef or chicken. Is the freeze dried stuff any good? About 25 years ago I backpacked in Idaho and I thought the meals we had then tasted like chicken or beef flavored styrofoam.

I will post my grocery list before I leave but I would prefer to try as much as I can here at home where it is easier to feed mistakes to the dog and order a pizza.

Adding protein like chicken.... We have taken chicken pouches and added them to dishes. Similar to tuna pouches, but chicken and not all stores carry them. They are a little heavier than dried, but quick and easy. I have dehydrated both fresh and pouch chicken, and feel the fresh chicken rehydrates better.

The freeze dried chicken is actually pretty good. I usually buy a #10 can and open it up and divide it up into 2 person servings and Vac seal them. We then add them to recipes in camp. It hydrates well and is super lt weight. I find it works better than dehydrated chicken.

For the Banks Fry Bake pan taking some oil along will not be a problem. Just use a good plastic bottle to store it in and place it in a good freezer ziplock bag with a couple of paper towels.
