The salt in most commercially dried foods helped me switch to cooking and dehydrating my own food. It tastes better, is fun to prepare and is a whole lot cheaper than the commercial stuff.

Anyone know of a rice and bean mix without all the salty seasoning? Everything I've tried tastes like a wad of salt. Even the seasoning in Zaratin's reduced sodium products is overwhelming. I'd really prefer just the rice and beans, and season it myself.

On the trail, I use minute rice and Old El Paso Black Bean in the foil pouches. If we are base camping, I don't bother and dehydrate the beans. If on a travel trip, I dehydrate either Old El Paso or canned beans.
Check the recipe-cooking sections. They might have good suggestions.

Have you tried Knorr's Red Beans & Rice Sides? (WalMart) A 7-minute simmer meal. If no fish to cook up..... trail sausage, chicken, gd. meat and turkey jerky substitute well. One packet is too much food for me so I split in half (5 mins. simmer time) and vacuum seal.
