Stop thief!
Tube steaks! Eat them as is or toss them in your meal. Wurst is the best. I stopped at Zup's at the end of our trip & loaded up on various tubular smoked meats & local exotic groceries. We ate Zup's cheddar brats last night at home. So juicy & that snap...as delicious as I remember. I picked up 2 packs of the wild rice brats on the recommendation from Bill C. Thanks-am looking forward to them.

nothing better than a venison dog with natural casing - nice snap when eaten - take froze - in zip-lock bag and sink. Usually a good meal on the forth night. a good all beef with natural casings is a close second.

The Zups hotdogs are also very good. But get the buns at Plum Bun down the street.
Live to eat!

they also make delicious ham sticks. best on-the-go trail food and they keep for 4 to 5 days.

We are bringing in Bratz for our next trip. I'm super excited about this! We plan to bring in a small cooler that can be slung over the shoulder) - and are thinking about sinking into the lake?
Do you think the animals can smell the food underwater? haha

We bring sausages all the time from a local smoke house. Check out the Wurst Haus in Hermann Mo. One of the best

Hard to beat Zup's wild rice brats IMHO. (H = hungry!)

We freeze ours for the second or third night, along with first night steaks and keep them in a small soft sided cooler. It's nice to have some fresh food before digging into the freeze dried grub.

The best way to bring in hotdogs is to freeze them, then take them in a very small collapsible cooler. Once at camp, put a rock in the cooler and sink in a few inches of water. This keeps them cold and protected. I use flatbread now instead of buns. Also, add brats to the discussion. I brought them in last year and they were great.

If you keep them out of the sun they'll last a few days on their own if you go early in the year like we do. Usually I just sink them in water near camp wrapped in plastic grocery bags with a couple rocks on them for protection. You could put them in Tupperware and if you're worried about critters. In water they'll last all week but we tend to eat the perishables first. On the good fishing days we stay on the water till late so simple meals like these are awesome. We also take in tuna, spam, summer sausage and shelf bacon for easy prep lunches. We put bread and buns in bread buddies, or Tupperware. Kinda bulky but very light. They get their own gym bag and I carry it over a shoulder on the portages. The empty tupperware is handy at the campsite or in the boat during the week and is how we pack out our trash. Light going out too.
Never thought about brats. I love brats. I take in a hot dog stick. I'll just prop the stick close to the fire and slow cook them so they bust open. Thanks for the idea!

There is something in them that makes my wife violently ill... within 1/2 hours. So no hot dogs in this house. Some of those super cheapy pizza from fundraisers do the same thing to her. Bacon doesn't bother her so we don't know what it might be.... probably a spice. I remember those big " Ball Park" brand franks in my youth....those we good. If you can find chedderworsts in your part of the world they are decent as well.

How do you keep them fresh and for how long do they keep?

Along with all the other food items I'll be taking, I always take a package of hot dogs. On those nights where I fish late or just want something simple, a couple hot dogs make a great meal or lunch. Cheap - easy - and easy to keep fresh. All you need is a stick and a campfire. Plus - Hot dogs just taste better when you're camping.
