I was researching for my route next week and came upon this great trip report. It's pretty amazing that Dixie was found. And a bat in your shoe??

I plan to take my dog for the first time next year and believe me, I will keep an eye on his whereabouts at all times!

Question for Sterngirl - was Dixie wearing her flotation vest when she was lost?

Great report, to bad about leaky canoe...it would of been nice to get some compensation! Glad Dixie came out ok! I went on a trip with 8 of us...4 I had never met. On the way up to meet the last two, it was discovered that there would be a dog going along! All I could think of was "oh great!" And all the extra hassle it might be for everyone to watch the dog,....boy was I ever wrong! Cooper (dog) is now the benchmark for all dogs that I go camping with. I'm glad yours turned out as nice!

One tip on lost dogs in the wilderness. Camping as a kid we lost our dog late one afternoon out hiking. My father took us back to camp and we grabbed clothes - dirty ones - full of our scent and placed them similarly around the woods, marking where with strips tied to trees. Sure enough, the next morning Rebel was found patiently waiting on one of my Dad's shirts.

What a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing the adventure... and that was an adventure!

I'm glad that all involved (including Dixie) had a successful trip.

You had quite an adventure. There was enough peril and drama to make it a very memorable trip I'm sure. At the beginning you mentioned butting heads with the outfitter. Was that because of bringing Dixie?

I can't imagine how your night with Dixie missing went but was thrilled to see you got her back.

Did the outfitter offer any $ back for the canoe problem? Just curious.

Bapabear,

Naw, butting heads with the outfitter was because of the permit. The guy couldn't find it in his system, so I ended up having to go to find some internet access so that I could print off the confirmation letter (which I usually bring along, but had forgotten this time) so that he could see that he was the one who was designated to give me my permit. Just a lot of hassle.

Yep, I was lucky to get Dixie back. It taught me a lesson... she is a well trained dog, but is still that... a dog.

Nope. No $ offered for the canoe.

If only Dixie could write a trip report of her own!

Hi Sterngirl,
I am impressed that you gals made that trip. My group was through there just a couple of days ahead of you. We put in at Kawishiwi Lake and went up through Malberg, over to Beaver, up through Boulder and then we went east to Makwa. We also enjoyed the island camp on Boulder.
Your word picture of how hard it was to get from Adams to Boulder does not do it jusice. It was a struggle for us four guys. You gals should have a real sense of accomplishment. As I stated above, I am impressed! Thanks for sharing your trip report. I will be posting ours as soon as I get all of our photos.

What a trip! Thanks so much for sharing. So glad everything turned out ok for you and Dixie -- you had me reaching for the Kleenex at one point!

Tom,
Dixie was not wearing her flotation vest when she was lost. She only wears it in the canoe (especially if on big or rough water). It comes off on portages so that she can carry her pack.
