The standard topo is a fine map, but with the "MapPack" subscription you can download other maps as, USGS7.5 Quads, 50K Canadian Topo, NOAA Harbor Charts, satellite and aerial images. And they can be transferred to your GPS. Lots of fun for a map-geek!
Sorry, don't want to sound like an advertisement so I should point out that other sources and programs have similar capabilities.

Not that I'm against purchasing the map subscription, but help me understand why it's important to get it. Because I'm confused - The unit came with a beautiful TOPO map of North America...what am I getting with the map subscription?

Just got this unit and am starting to learn it.

Anyone know where I can get BWCA / Quetico Maps to install on it?

The MapPack (North American and Canada) are pretty good, but don't show the portages / campsites.

Kip, take it from me. Ken is a guru on this. Last year I tried for 4 months and couldn't figure it out( of course I am lost with new electronics)Met with Ken at 'copia last year for some hands on instruction and he also loaded his map program. Now instead of being in a fog, it's only cloudy. Joel (also a PN 60).

Thanks Ken. I work this weekend, but am off next Monday / Tuesday. What works for you?

Anything I can do in the meantime (like download files)?

Mine just arrived!

Was very happy to see the topo disc of North America included! I'm kind of a map nerd, so that was a great surprise!!!

Now i'm reading through the manual.

If you use a laptop and have the Delorme Topo installed bring it. Otherwise I'll have my own. That's a no on the Red Pine maps, the Delorme maps are better.

Ken,

I don't have a laptop that I can bring. If you don't mind bringing yours, that would be great! Thanks!

Can I send you the route file I made from Memory Maps via an email then?

Butthead, the map files you have on the BWCA with portages/camps/etc, are they available online somewhere?

Delorme GPS's are fussy about what USB you use, try on in the back fixed to the motherboard.

PS: My laptop always connects, my desktop, with 12 can be fussy. bh

Ken, I got the USB issue worked out. Just had to reinstall the drivers.

Red Pine Maps? Do these work with the PN-60w?

Looking forward to meeting with you this weekend. Should I just bring my GPS only?

Ken,

Thanks. Copia sounds fine. I should be there Saturday.

How comfortable am I? I've just starting playing around with them. I was able to import the Canadian and some of the US maps (Minnesoata and WI) from the CD's that came with the TOPO North American 10.

My GPS came with the Map Pack subscription. Does Delorme have these files (the BWCA / Quetico) on their website to download? Or do they come from another source.

How comfortable are you with the topo map that came with your PN60?

I have a bunch of files, and can show you how to import them. Including Canadian maps, portages, and campsites both known and potential.
BWCA files are well established and are quite accurate for both.
One thing I will suggest is to purchase a map subscription from Delorme. $29 for a year, all the downloading you can do.

I work Monday thru Friday, but will see ya at Copia for sure. Discuss it then?

Ken,

Have you ever had trouble with your computer detecting that the GPS was connected to your computer? When I do the "sync" function, sometimes it can't find it.
