On my last bwca backpack trip I was told that as a backpacker I didn’t need to use established bwca sites as long as I was a certain distance from lakes and trails. Check this with the rangers.

Just theoretical for now, but I am keeping it in my mind. It'll probably be a question for the USFS, but I wanted to see if anyone's tried it. Has anyone pulled a PMA permit to add on to a hiking permit? I know it's one of those rare cases where there aren't that many hikers and even fewer PMA travelers, so does that mean there are any PMA hikers? Does anyone know if it's allowed or if there are any rule speedbumps I'm not thinking of?

I would think you would just follow the same protocol and pull the PMA permit with PMA, zone, dates, when you pick up your overnight hike BWCA permit for an entry point.... If paddling in and then taking overnight hike, just pull the PMA permit when getting the overnight paddle BWCA permit. But maybe the USFS has other ideas...
