Trip Introduction:
I was unable to do a trip last year due to a medical issue, so I decided to get at least one trip in this year for sure. I just wanted to get away for a few days, and I figured that if I went to the least popular entry point, I should succeed. I was pleasantly surprised by how good of a trip that it was.

I never imagined that my life would become this busy after retirement. I have been constantly on the go and have been dealing with a few serious family issues. I couldn't make it north to trip last year due to a medical issue, so when I was feeling extra stressed, I just said **** it and headed north. I wasn't able to leave southern Iowa until the evening of June 9th. I stopped to see my son for a few minutes and then headed north. I was amazed at how smooth the trip through the Twin Cities went at 3 am. I stopped at a rest area just before Cloquet and took a couple hour nap in the car. I don't know about anyone else, but to me there is just something to round the big curve and see the Ely water tower ahead. It means that the adventure is about to begin. My first stop was at Canadian Waters to pick up my permit and a couple of supplies. I have used three different outfitters through the years, and they were all excellent, but Dan has always treated me well. The Northwind solo sitting on my car was purchased from him. I was looking forward to grabbing a bite at Britton's Cafe, but I found out that they are closed on Tuesdays. I picked up some bait and a license and went to the entry point. I brought way too much stuff, mainly because it was going to be a basecamp situation, and I only had to carry it in and out. I did meet a gentleman at the parking area that was there to take pictures, so that surprised me. The trip in had many downed trees on the trail that had to be stepped or climbed over, crawled under, or get around them. I understand that this is the least used entry point in the BWCA, so the lack of trail maintenance wasn't a surprise. I loaded the canoe and made the short paddle to the western most campsite. It was a comfortable camp with both a tent and a hammock. I then went on a paddle around the lake and managed to catch a couple of northern pike and a good, eater size walleye. The bugs were the worst that I've ever experienced in the boundary waters, but the wind kept them away when it was blowing. I would fish when it was calm and laying the hammock when it was windy. I managed to catch plenty of fish to eat, plus some, and also just have a nice relaxing time with no cell phone coverage. One highlight of the trip was a large northern trying to steal a 17-inch walleye from my stringer. I had it lifted out of the water past it's gills, but he let go before I could get him in the canoe. I packed up and left on Friday due to the predicted weather. Imade a stop at Betty's pies for some broasted chicken and watched a big freighter have no trouble with the waves on Lake Superior, then drove south through the rain and thunderstorms. I had a fun trip to Bog Lake and will probably go back. It's a pretty lake; it has the solitude that I look for and has pretty good fishing. I would definitely recommend it for a spur of the moment trip, or one where travelling a lot isn't a priority.
