Trip Introduction:
This was my first trip to BWCA. Main goal was to test equipment and check terrain. If everything went good then continuing on to fishing spots.
Report
The trip started out bad and ended in failure. Tried to get to planned entry point #14, ended up getting stuck in the snow. The previous day 12+ inches of snow had fallen. Ended up entering #15 at dark. decided to spend the night in the truck. In the morning ate breakfast and loaded gear. before I set out on the trail my snowshoes Both broke. I hadn't even left the parking lot. So I tried it without snowshoes and only made it in 1/2 mile before calling it quits. To save what was left of the day. I decided to just day hike the trail to get myself familiar with the area and terrain. After hiking thru the snow I realised that even if my snowshoes hadn't broke they probably wouldn't have been much better. If I want to hike this area in the winter I'm going to need larger snowshoes. Other than that the area is beautiful and weather was great. Temp was -4 in the morning and 5 at noon. No wind in the am with it changing to light in the afternoon.
