Trip Introduction:
3 days on Rog Lake for Brook Trout

Day 1 of 5

Wednesday, June 06, 2007 Returning from farther inside BWCA, we took the Northern portage into Rog Lake. It was a long portage for us, many first timers to BWCA, but had an easy trail and nice entry and exit points. Made it to the one campsite on Rog and was not occupied so set up camp, did a little fishing and swimming. Very nice swimming area as it was not too deep and the kids could swim around without worrying about going over their heads. Also some nice, large boulders they could jump off.

Day 3 of 5

Thursday, June 07, 2007 I fished hard to try and figure out where the Brook Trout that I had read about would be in this lake. I traveled all over the lake and used multiple baits with no success. Ended up catching bass like everyone else - plenty available and nice size - but never had a Trout bite.

Day 5 of 5

Friday, June 08, 2007 Storm was heading in later in the morning (we had a weather radio along) so we woke right at first light, packed up and headed for the Eastern portage on Rog Lake. It was short but overgrown and slick from springs right in the middle of the trail.

Took us about 3 hours of coasting/very easy paddling downstream to get to Seagull Landing and still beat the storm by a few hours.

All in all, we had a good stay on Rog Lake but my hope of catching my first Brook Trout in a lake was not realized. Could have been me, time of year, etc.
