Today is a layover day and my goal is to chase Walleyes. This lake is deep and has little structure so it probably doesn’t have a huge population walleyes but there si potential for big ones. The wind is terrible again. We let it push us across our trout hole and get a double. We take a break form the wind and stretch our legs on an island. Sara reads while I jig around the island I catch about a dozen smallies but no walleyes. Time to move---we find a reef off of another island and I start jigging different depths catching some nice 19-20” smallies in about 12-15’ of water along with a bunch of annoying dinks. I try the top of the reef in about 10’ of water and when I set the hook into something heavy. I can tell it is a walleye as it stays down deep for awhile stripping line. As I work him to the surface he makes several runs towards the bottom of the lake until Sara corrals him with the net. He fought bigger than he was, but a nice 22-23 incher.

I have fun catching a couple more until the dink smallies move in and I eventually stop as my supply of Gulp is quickly being destroyed by all the smallies hitting. The wind picks up and I really can’t keep the canoe in good position anyway so we go back to camp for a dinner of campfire Pizza and the rest of the Merlot. ON the way back to camp we check out “Quetico Joe’s” campsite and find a moose skull. Also that the campsite has been vandalized, with the seats put into the fire pit and a couple of live trees chopped down. Very sad---but we clean it up a bit and try to make it better.
