southern Utah wander and big, wonderful lands
by buz
Another day, another grand hike planned. Lower calf creek, 3 mile each way in/out hike along creek to big waterfall at dead end in canyon, about 10 miles west of boulder, back along wild drive on hwy 12. Ancient indians lived here, and you figure out why. Steady water and small, fertile stream bottom. Petroglyphs up on cliffs on trail in, too far away to take pictures. Here's what we saw.
Falls were much bigger than I expected, due to late season, big snowfall. Water was waaaaaaaaaaaaayyy to cold for anything but my hand, but son dipped into beautiful pool for a very quick one, brave young man in my book. We soaked our shirts for the hot walk out, worked great for personal A/C.
Drove back east on hwy 12 to Torrey Utah. Road between Boulder and Torrey another major beauty. Leave Boulder, climb up boulder mountain, away from high desert setting, forests, small lakes, 9,000+ feet, -15 degree temp. drop. Drop dead gorgeous area. Ended day for dinner at Capitol Reef Cafe, in Torrey, another really good place to eat.
