Part 8 of 8
Day VI  Tuesday 27 July, 1971

Left camp 7:30 A. M. Had to go quite a ways out of our way around the point. A fish jumped about 6-8 in. from the side of the bow.

[This photo was taken at our last “chocolate break” in the narrows above Crane Lake. Notice the water-ski belt that I used for a PFD.]

10:10 arrived in Crane Lake. Had lots of power boats and two houseboats in the narrows.

Final landing 10:40 A. M. Loaded the canoe back on our car to head back down the Echo Trail. [It wasn’t a paved road back then like it is now; was more of a two-track much of the way.]

Had coffee and Neil checked in at U. S. Customs. Lunched at Headquarters Resort again and then traveled back down the Echo Trail to Camp Easton. (On the road there a deer ran in front of the car.) Turned in equipment at Canadian Waters, called home and shopped for gifts and souvenirs.

Supper at A & W in Tower, Minn. Stayed at Charlotte’s Motel, Carlton, Minn. [cost $7.21]

Notes:

Menus: We took a loaf of bread, squashed it up, and had sandwiches for lunch every day. Breakfasts were either pancakes or powdered egg mixes (scrambled), hash browns. Dinners were Mac N Cheese, Mountain House entrees, etc. after the steak and oranges the first day. Main snack was a half bar of German’s Sweet Chocolate per person each day. We had a few other snacks, dried fruit, Space Food sticks. Instant coffee and hot chocolate. Some sort of orange juice drink mix from Canadian Waters.

Notes for another time:

Take: hot dogs   marshmallows   real eggs   bacon   Tang   more snack items

LLC be sure to wear long pants, hat with brim, etc.

[Our son was born on April 10, 1972. He had lots of black hair and deep brown eyes at birth and still has ‘til this day.]
