Day 6 of 8
Thursday, August 16, 2012 When we awoke it was still windy and overcast. The mist was flying by us over the lake in sheets. We eventually decided to move south on Paull. The wind was so strong we actually had to carry our canoe through camp to the other side of the island to load it and leave our campsite. We stopped to see the pictographs not far from our campsite on Paull; they were further down from the point and fairly small.  We continued on our way down Paull with a gusty tail wind. From Paull, we took a 275m portage into a small lake where we saw our only people for the day. They do stand out because one of them was on a paddle board!!! All we could say was good luck with the wind on Paull. The three men asked about the upcoming portage we had just completed. We replied it wasn’t very difficult. We soon found out why they asked about the portage as we found several knee deep areas on our next portage. It was mucky, wet, and did we mention wet? We were blown by a stiff tail wind through a moderately sized lake between Paull and Upper Kilburn. We had lunch at the 30m portage out of that lake and eventually made it onto Upper Kilburn relatively early in the afternoon. With the wind picking up, we scouted the first two campsites on the north side of the lake, neither of which looked terribly exciting. We ended up on a small island on the southwest side of Upper Kilburn that had two trees in the fire pit. After hanging up our clothesline to dry our clothes and gear in the wind, we went about cleaning up our camp. Cleaning up camp included building a new two-chambered fire pit and a new bench. Note-our bench is tall enough that you don’t even feel like you are sitting on the ground! We had a supper of pad thai with no fish as it was too windy to go fishing. We enjoyed a campfire and cooking in the cooking chamber of our new fire pit. This is a nice site, however, it appears that several storms have caused damage to that island. We found a different fire pit on the island towards the back that also had trees in it.
