Day 5 of 9
Saturday, June 15, 2013 Travel day today. My weather radio said south winds 15 to 20-figured as we packed up to head south towards the Argo portage. We hugged the east shore and the forecasted winds never appeared so it was smooth sailing. I wanted to stop at the pictographs on Darky and somehow managed to miss them. Since backtracking on a travel day wasnt on the itinerary, we kept going. We met a fellow at the Argo portage who had some nice camera gear and was taking pictures for the Boundary Waters Journal. We had a nice chat. He told us he had been fishing Josey the day before-a lake which we considered going to but didnt. I was happy (for us) to hear he got skunked there in a few hours of fishing. The portage to Argo was a good trail mostly and we were soon looking out at what some people think is the prettiest lake in Quetico. The water almost looked like we were in the Florida keys. The wind started kicking up so we paddled into the Siobhan river on our way to Roland. The Siobhan river was crystal clear and we could see smallies on nests in the shallower sections. It widens out to a pond and we went straight to the portage to Roland. We met a group there that looked like they had military background. The leader told me they were from California with only a few days off. They planned on 120 mile loop in 6 days-made me tired just to hear about it but the way they galloped through the portage and shot out into the lake I knew they would make it. At the Roland end of the portage, we saw a dozen occupied bass beds. We headed to a nearby island campsite that was rated 4 stars on our map but seemed considerably lower than that to us. We were so anxious to fish, that looking elsewhere wasnt a consideration. We got everything set up and headed out to fish. We had a blast the next several hours catching and releasing about 60 smallies. Andrew took a 5 second "swim" and was terrorized by a large spider before hitting the tent. The forecasted storm was pretty minor but we did fall asleep to the pitter patter of rain drops looking forward to the next day.
