We woke up to a cool and overcast day. We had a quick cup of coffee and headed out fishing. We started at the same spot right off our camp and began to catch fish from the get go. In the first minute we connected with a double-- two twin Walleyes were landed at the same time. We fished this same area for two hours and again caught fish almost at will. The lure of choice was still 3/8 oz. jig and white twister tails. The magic depth seemed to be 14 to 16 feet that morning. That spot also gave up more bass, and Northerns, but the majority were hard fighting Walleye, the largest being 24 inches. Our tally for the two hours here was 35 walleyes, 11 bass, and 3 Northern. We decided to give this area a rest and try our hand at catching some more Lake Trout.

We found a spot that was 60 feet deep with reefs on opposite ends. The wind was perfect to drift from reef to reef, a distance of ΒΌ mile separated the reefs. We caught a Lake Trout on our first three passes, all three over 24 inches. The next three passes yielded no fish, so we continued to drift toward a small island we had yet to try. As we approached the point of the island and hit the magic depth of 14 feet we hooked our first Walleye. This area was also full of fish! We trolled around the rocky point and nabbed another 15 to 20 Walleye, again all between 19 and 23 inches. This lake was something!!! I look at my watch and it was 1pm and time for lunch. We relaxed for an hour as we scarfed down peanut butter sandwiches and trail mix, washed down with Kool-Aid. At 2pm we hit the lake again. We fished the honey hole by our camp, but the fishing had slowed. We still managed some fish, but not the quantity we had in the morning session. We ended the afternoon and evening session with 33 Walleyes, 6 bass, and just three Northerns.

Not a bad afternoon and evening, but not up to our Poohbah standards. We decided it was time to go in as the mosquitoes had seemed to find us out in the middle of the lake. The rain had brought them out in droves. We arrived at camp in short order and ran for cover as the obnoxious critters chased us all the way! We spent a couple of minutes killing the few that entered the screen house upon our arrival. We had yet to have a camp fire on this trip, and tonight will be no different. The mosquitoes were not worth the trouble. We fired up the small Primus lantern and prepared our dinner of turkey and dressing, green beans and potatoes. What a feast it was!! (If you have not tried Camp Chow from Trail Center Lodge on the Gunflint you are missing out. All of their food is restaurant quality and I highly recommend it. Early to bed tonight, this fishing is hard work!!!)
