Poohbah 2013 -1 billion Moquitoes, 400 fish, 2 happy fishermen
by walllee
As we woke that morning we found it to be partly cloudy and warm. The weather this trip had been strange! At 6am it was cloudy and warm and by 7am it felt like it could snow! Very strange! Fishing was going to be a challenge as the wind was strong out of the north east. It would keep us from fishing most of the areas we had had success. We decided to drift for some Lake Trout although the wind was too strong to effectively fish in this manner. One thing I did not bring was my drift sock. It would have come in handy!
We each put on a 1oz jig and tipped them with white 5” twister tails as we drifted across the 80 feet basin close to camp. In a few minutes, Jody’s pole doubled over and the fight was on. This was a big fish!!! The fish stayed on the bottom for over 5 minutes before Jody made any headway. After 10 minutes, the fish was still deep and making long hard runs as Jody kept pressure on the rod. He began to make some progress with the fish as he reeled, but the fish made a violent run for the bottom and in a instant the huge fish was free! “$#@%&$#@ “as Jody yelled reeling in his lonely jig. We guessed it was a huge Laker, but in this lake who knows…. giant Northern...? 5 pound Walleye...? 60 pound Sturgeon...?
A few minutes my lure was hit with vengeance. This fish was not as big as Jody’s, but was nice!! After a few minutes a nice 30” Laker was in my grasp. The next two passes in this area produced a couple surprises. We caught 2 Walleyes in the 80 feet of water; one was 23 inch and the other was 25 inches. We found it odd that these Walleyes would be out in this deep basin that had no structure. By that time, the wind was producing some 2 foot rollers so we headed back to camp to wait out the wind. We spent the rest of the day in camp doing odds and ends, and I even took my first nap in the hammock. We were able to get back on the lake at 7pm and fished the reef by our camp. It did not disappoint us as we managed to boat another 25 Walleye. We headed in at 8:30pm for a bite to eat and in bed by 9:15.
