Kings (and Queen) Of Kawnipi
by NorthwoodsHeaven
Make no mistake; we came to Kawnipi for the fishing. We worked hard to get here so we could have 3 days with nothing to do but search out Kawnipis fabled walleyes. We woke up to an early morning fog, and overcast skies. No wind. Not even a breath. That would hold true virtually the entire day. We headed out early. Fishing in the morning was slow. We caught a couple of monster bass, two or three walleye, and a couple small northern. We were looking for deep-water humps and drop-offs targeting walleye, trolling in between locations. After an afternoon relaxing under the tarp (it misted on and off) we shoved off for the evening expedition with a bit better success. We caught 8-10 walleye, with a few 22 and above inchers. Sprinkled in were numerous 30 and under inch northern. This would become a pattern. We caught tons of northern on every outing, but nothing over 30 or 31 inches. August is not a good month for big northern…. I think the lack of wind made the walleye a big tough on this day. But never the less we had a great day and headed in for dinner. I made a comment on dehydrated food before. Let me explain. The thing about dehydrated food, is it must be rehydrated. This takes time. When each meal has 47 items that need dehydration it takes A LOT of time. This is where my brothers and I had a philosophical difference of opinion with our dear mother. Part of the fun of the Quetico to her is trying to cook gourmet, delicious meals in the woods. The fun of the Quetico to the brothers is relaxing and fishing. Though you might not see the immediate connection these two forces work in direct opposition to each other. It’s a linear correlation. The more time cooking and cleaning the less time relaxing and fishing. And so it went every meal. MOM THIS IS TAKING FOREVER! BOYS IT WILL BE DELICIOUS JUST WAIT and on and on it went. Now don’t think this means we expected her to do all the work, we helped at every step along the way, we just wanted those steps to take about 80% less time. It felt like with every new dish to be cleaned that was 3 or 4 less walleye in the boat. Now to be fair the end result was always INCREDIBLE, but the battle that preceded each camping cooking creation was comical. I wish I could say we were perfect children and did not whine about this at all, but alas. I cannot lie.
