Part 7 of 8
Iron to Little Vermillion Moving day. We had hoped to go at least 25 miles, and ended up making about 40! Woke up early to see what we could do on LacLaCroix. We had consistent weather for most of the last day, so we anticipated west winds again. We knew west wind would be disaster crossing the top portion of LaLaCroix. But, we had a cool east breezes in the morning, which gradually shifted to NE. Not bad as we hugged the east shore near Warrior Hill up to the top. Rest and a snack, and we saw the first of several fishing boats from up in the Reserve area. There was only one other canoe seen on the entirety of LacLaCroix – probably about a 6-8 boats though. Winds completely died as we hit the really big water heading west. Then they gradually started from the N-NW as we hit the islands before making the turn south. Lunch near sand bar island, and the wind was at our backs heading south to the first of two mechanized portages. We paddled into Loon by about 4:00, and then west into the loon river. We did not have a map beyond that point, but we thought we had figured on about another 3-4 miles to Little Vermillion. At the Loon River Portage, we learned it was 7 miles to the next campsite! At 5:00, we either had to turn back east to find a campsite, or power through the river (where we were not going to camp!). So, two more hours in the canoe, through beautiful rice fields at the end, and we were greeted by a flat sand beach on the southwest end of Little Vermillion. Relaxing evening and a 10-12 mile paddle was all that remained.
