Fun on Fenske Lake
by Spartan2
Wednesday morning was a quiet one around the cabin. After a leisurely breakfast, Grandpa and Robert tried out a new card game that Robert had made up using two decks of cards. He had bought new Wolf Photo cards as a souvenir at the Wolf Center yesterday.
Then we headed for the dock to go canoeing on Fenske Lake again. Grandma was pleased to find a lovely pink lady slipper (moccasin flower) growing down by the lake shore. It’s a type of orchid and Robert had never seen one before.
We paddled down to the end of the lake by the campground, and noticed a nesting loon on the shore. We were pleased to get close enough to have a good look, and also to take a photo. We tried not to disturb it.
As is often the case, the mate of the nesting loon put on a show out in the lake, to distract us from giving our attention to the one on the nest. This is always a fun situation, and Grandma was pleased to snap lots of photos.
After the morning paddle, there was a bath in the bubbly tub, a change into clean clothes, a lunch of sandwiches and applesauce, and then we were headed in to town again. This time we thought we would check out the North American Bear Center.
This is Ted.
And this is Honey.
Robert took a good picture of Honey with his camera, too.
At the Bear Center we watched the live bears through the window. We also watched a movie, and looked at the many exhibits. Robert chose a souvenir here also: another deck of playing cards! These have a different wild animal on each card. Cards seem to make great souvenirs.
When we got back to the cabin, Robert helped Grandpa with his fishing gear and they tried fishing from the dock again. It was unsuccessful, as the line kept getting snagged. Grandpa isn’t an experienced fisherman, and fishing from the dock wasn’t something he did very well.
Grandma photographed the spring flowers. The strawberries were blooming, and there was a pretty yellow Clintonia that had just opened up.
We were going to have a cook-out tonight. (Those brats we didn’t have the other day.) Robert needed to help with a cook-out for his Cub Scout badge, so he did lots of helping, like setting the table on the porch,
helping Grandpa with the firewood,
and of course cooking the brats, too.
There was a bit of a rosy glow in the sunset this evening. We decided that Spruce Cabin was a good place to spend time in the North Country.
