Quetico Solo w dog McIntyre Woodside and Sunday Lakes
by TomT
Got up early. Not as cold as before and the sun is shining brilliantly. Breakfast is something called Quia. It’s like oatmeal but has coconut in it. It’s very bland and I throw in lots of dried strawberries and apples that I made before the trip. My coffee is really good out of a french press. I’m using a dark roast that I ground right before leaving. By making it stronger this trip it’s the best coffee ever. I also am eating trail bars from Usana Health Sciences. The Nutty Berry bar is to die for.
Soon we’re on the water looking for fish, specifically walleye or lake trout. I troll a crank bait in the bay out front and pick up two small smallmouth bass that I release. After that I’m into two real nice northerns maybe 28 inches. They are a lot of meat and it’s still early so I let them go because the action is so good. I really want trout or walleye today.
That was a mistake as I lose a few others and the hits slow down. Soon it’s mid day and I don’t have any fish. I go into a shallow bay and put on a spinnerbait hoping for at least a northern pike. Bam, there it is. A fighter too and I lose him but get him again on the next cast where he was. These fish aren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. :) Several times this trip I'll see a northern slam a spinner bait, get off, turn around and chase it and hit again.
I pull over to a flat rock and do my best to filet it trying to avoid the bones. I end up with four good size chunks, just what we need.
I made up a four serving package of mashed potatoes and gave Luna a big bowl full of fish and potatoes. It was gone in a minute. The lunch turned out real good and we were full. Luna played ball, we swam and then it was nap time.
In the evening I go out for lake trout. Last year I had good luck in the south east corner of Sunday Lk. so put on a deep diver and troll my way there. I get no takers this time except for small bass.
Last year I hooked into a monster here but never saw what it was before it came off the hook after a 10 minute battle. I could barely move this fish out of 60 feet of water and it could go as it pleased. It was BIG. I vowed to come back here and get him. So, here I am in the same spot one year later. I troll the tail dancer back and forth anticipating the monster’s hit. "C'mon big boy, I know you're down there...." Nothing. It’s clouding over now and the wind is picking up. I will leave but I’m sure to be back in search of this giant that swims below. My personal Moby Dick, if you will.
This evening I listen to the weather and hear rain for the next three days and lots of it. I make the decision to head out a day early tomorrow. This way I can take it easy and not rush. I plan to visit my sister’s family in Superior Wi. on the way home so I can visit longer now.
